interior panel dye
i am sure most people's plastic interior panels (especiall the red as i know first hand) are faded pretty good!! mine are in my 85gs and 84gsl-se(with only 82K and sitting in a garage!). does anyone know if there is a plastic or vinyl dye that will work that will bring the color back with good color matching results?
*yes i did post it in the lunge as well. thought it would do better here.

Did most of my interior........Looks brand new..............going on 1 year on the door panels.......
Its says you can color your carpet as well.........I am going to try this on the rear carpet.........When it gets warmer......should be in the 80's next week so maybe then......
All I did was clean the panels with waarm water and soap......let dry........and spray.................let dry........

Has anyone tried MolecuBond?? You can get it from AircraftSpruce.com or the manufacturer www.bryndana.com. Rumour has it that Wal Mart might be selling it also.

I used a product called Vinyl Kote - it's a professional product that actually dyes vinyl rather than just coat it. This stuff is amazing! It does not come off!

You can check out my car on the link below if you want to get an idea how it looks - I did the door panels, horn button, e-brake and rear wheel well covers

i need to paint or dye mine...... what do you guys think is the BEST remedy other than replacing?
I will say that professional's use dye. Paint is going to flake or scratch off. I don't know about the sanding method but if you screw it up you can always dye it
Do not use a topical surface product like paint--it will flake and scratch off. Clean them thoroughly and use a product which actually bonds to the plastic or vinyl and is UV stable, such as Molecubond. (I haven't tried Vinyl Kote).

I used black - no code required for black. If you want to match up to the original color, send them a color sample and they will match it (see their site for details).
The stuff is expensive - $110 a quart (US) - and it has to be sprayed. I will not fade, flake or scratch off.

I work at NAPA and they carry a few remedys for what your looking for. Just ask them to see what ways they have instock and see what they can get. That or if its just the dash, Victoria British sells a dash piece that goes over top of the old one, good idea if you have cracks. Or you could do what i'm doing, is getta all custom guages, and do your dash in Aluminum hehe.. later, pm if you have any questions about NAPA stuff cause i'll look on here on my lunch, and can reply within the day. Later

This stuff works great only 6.00 a can......
I did my brown horn button...now burgundy........door panels.....center console.......and still have some left........
This is very easy.........You learn how to take all your panels off.....You make it look brand new........It does not rub off.......This is the stuff interior restoration shops use.......At least the one that re-did mt leather interior.......

There are two different dye types, those that dye leather/fabric and those that have the ability to dye (penetrate) plastics and vinyls.
What they use on leather is not typically the same product they use on hard materials. I would debate any statement that says professional restoration shops use the same product for both leather and vinyl - don't confuse the two because they are not the same

They use this stuff for the plastic and vinyl parts....not the leather.........
Here are sonme older pictures of my console and new leather seats....

i have an 84 GSL-SE and i was just wondering exactly how hard it is to get the entire dash off for resurfacing like that. Would it be easier to just by some 3M masking tape and tape off everything i dont want to paint and paint it while sitll attached if i made sure to get every spot possible? Just throwin our ideas because ive never taken the actual dash off of any car, ive just taken parts of it off.

I went to Canoga Tops and they re-did my leather seats that were shot........and replaced my leather cover on a volvo 960 arm rest to match the seats..........I used real leather on the seats and arm rest....I needed a color to match the interior plastic.......And used the SEM Color Coat to match my interior color on the plastic parts........
The plastic was painted........The leather areas on the seats and armrests were replaced with leather.....
The shop uses the SEM paints for vinyl and plastic restoration........

does it work on carpet? if not, is there a product you would recommend for the carpet? or would i be better off getting new carpet?
this is what i have to work with:
the leather and the dash are in pretty good shape. but the hatch area is signifigantly faded (plastic AND carpet).

Weird- I just did a search on the forum for Parasol dyes earlier today. Here is the link to that thread-

Parasol seems highly recommended.

let me make sure i'm clear; this stuff is for the interior plastics, correct?

The stuff works great on the door panels and plastic parts..........I have not tried it yet on the carpet........
I will later when it gets warm........had to redo my tranny and other projects pushed the carpet back......
I do have new pictures that I will post of my interior showing the doors and horn button.......
I am very happy with the results and the fact that I did it and did not have to pay somebody else to do it........

Damn those seats look nice Jim..Looks like a leather recliner. Put a tv in the car, tune in the game, put a beer or four in the storage bin and your set!
Did I recall from the earlier thread that your armrest/cupholder was from a Volvo? That's pretty slick.
