Hey Guys

So I'm trying to remove my intake manifold so that I can put freeze plugs in the coolant holes while I have the coolant drained. So I took off the 4 12mm bolts holding it in place, and it wouldn't budge.

So I take a glance over at my spare 12a, which has no manifold attached, and notice two studs sticking out just below the coolant holes. Well I'm not dumb, I know that there have to be nuts that go on there somehow.

So I look back at my manifold and can't for the life of me find these nuts! I've found two small holes that look like they take an extra-super-large allen key, which I don't have.

Anybody know what kind of tool you need to get at these?

First and Second pics are the best shots I could snap of the weirdass bolt/nut/thingies I'm talking about.

And just for fun, I threw in two pictures of the absolutely disgusting radiator the car had in it. I took it to a local place to be completely overhauled since new ones aren't available. And a pic of a poster I saw at the Rad place. Should be a 7 in one of those garages but oh well.

Yep, hex cap screws. You'll need to get a large hex allen wrench or hex socket to get those out. My RB intake for the Dellorto has them all around it. I've used a six point star socket to get them off as well before.

 

any idea what size? I need to go buy the socket

Maybe a 1/4" but don't quote me on it. I'm at work and I don't have the OEM intake anymore to compare for ya anyway. Maybe someone else can take a look see and fill you in. Good luck.

 

I just got a radiator from radiator.com for $119 delivered in 48 hours

 

my factory intake for my 85 gsl just had 6 of the same size bolts/nuts. 4 bolts, and 2 nuts that go on those 2 studs. i don't remember seeing any hex thingies anywhere on the intake.

STOP! Those arent neccesary! Just leave 'em be. The nuts are just to either side of those things, closer to the engine (not so far out, if you know what I mean. They are hard to see, feel them with your hands.

ps. the nuts are directly above the studs for the exhaust manifold (which you need to replace with headers by the way )

 

WRONG!

Those hex screws are NPT plugs. You see the thread tape around them? Let's see a pic just above those. Also, try to get a shot of the entire length of the manifold from front to back. The nuts are near the intake runners and coolant passages. They are a pain in the *** to see, and you'll have to feel around most likely to get the socket on them. I normally use a deepwell socket and a 3" extension on a 3/8" ratchet.

 

he's right....you need to worry about those for the intake manifold to come off! There are to 12mm nuts your missing, back between that pic and the bolts you already removed. Look at an intake gasket @ racingbeat.com as a refrence.

 

I'm willing to bet those hex plugs WHICH SHOULD NEVER BE REMOVED are BSP, not NPT.

 

I just noticed this in the Sterling carb thread. Guess where those hidden nuts are to be found.

Lol, well I came back today to say the mystery was solved, but you guys beat me to it.

MattG, you're rignt. I totally and completely missed those nuts.

I ended up taking the other ones out (8mm Hex Socket for those wondering) but it doesn't matter. Why? Because the whole idea of taking my manifold off today was to install 20mm freeze plugs in the two coolant holes, to make changing the intake easier in the future.

So no biggie. I put the hex plugs back in, and continued work. I'm going to document the whole thing in a thread on how to install freeze plugs.

They are tucked away in there. Tuff to find them lil boogers

I did the same thing at first, then when I found them I was so excited I forgot to drain the coolent and had a coolent gyser shoot out when I cracked the last nut loose
