Yeah gas is a good cheap universal solvent that will not hurt the paint, I use it for cleaning all kinds of stuff off my car (tar, oil, grime, smog from my tailpipe). I don't know why people have such an aversion to using it (just don't smoke when doing so!). Also Manntis is right on with using Windex, this won't dissolve the adhesive like gas will but it will disrupt the adhesive bond to the paint so that it rubs off easily.

Kerosene is a less flammable and cheaper substitute for gasoline.

Yep Kerosene is better than gas for the reasons trochoid points out (and it's not as volatile so it doesn't smell as bad) but I never seem to have a can of it around when I need it so I just borrow from the lawn mower can.

When I had my clothing store we'd tape up indie band posters, coming events, etc. to the countertop and found that windex was the easiest to get rid of adhesive left behind when the tape was removed. after a minimum 5 minute soak the stuff rubs off with your fingers easily without leaving anything behind.
