I'm so freakin' stupid!!!!

So I was paiting my engine bay one, so I tape off around it about 3-4 inches thick. After painting, it was getting dark so I decided to wrap it up. Well it just so happend to rain, keeping in mind I didn't take the tape off. Well I woke up the next morning and started pealing the tape off. The tap was a beast to get off and the glue is stuck to the paint. I can't afford to get the car repainted, but it will get a new paint job in the future. How can I get the glue off? I tried my fingernail, a sponge with soap and water, but nothing. I don't want to scratch the paint if I don't have too. Can anybody help me with this. I don't want to ride around with top glue all over my car. I will snap some pics tomorrow and show you. I just really want to get this stuff off!!!! I am so STUPID!

Try some adhesive remover, sold at any auto parts store.

Oh yeah, and in the future, use painters tape. The adhesive on that isn't nearly as strong.

Well it was supposed to be painters tape. I guess from the rain it stuck to the car.

Mineral spirits or paint thinner with a terry cloth rag works well.

Thinner and spirits are colder solvents, won't harm a thing as long as the paint is set up hard enough. They won't even take off set latex paint, where Goo Gone will.

we're at 3.00 for 87 here in ohio and for 94 we're up to 3.99 a gallon. definatly go to napa or any retailer that sells car paint(not rattle can) and get the adhesive remover. goo gone isnt totally kosher for all painted surfaces. i had used a nice thing called bug and tar remover, lol. TRY IT, it WORKS WONDERS!!! post back with the results.

denatured alcohol is what i used when i put lettering and pinstripes on cars. but be carefull of what kind of rag you use sometimes they are more abrasive then they look.

Gasoline will work very well on adhesives, much better than rubbbing alcohol which can be hard on the clear coat. A soft cotten towel (baby diaper is good), soak it and the adhesive well, give it a few minutes to soften then wipe it off with with a circular wiping motion. Persistence is better than pressure, work it a while and it will all come off. When you are done clean it up with some detergent. This is the method I use to clean of the residual double sticky tape that holds on the side moldings. You will need about a pint of gas to do the whold job, so I wouldn't worry about the price.

Given that windex hasn't ruined anyone's paint job, I'd say it's safe.

Most people aren't aware if you spray windex on old tape glue, let it sit for 5-6 minutes, then carefully pick away at the glue it comes off quite easily.

i wouldnt be all that concerned about the paint.. once you remove the glue you can just touch up the paint with a small brush. ^ that remover sounds good tho

I've always used WD-40 as an adhesive remover.

It's an engine bay. It's gonna get WD-40 in it at some point sooner or later. I doubt WD-40 hurts paint.

I challenge anyone to find a gallon of any solvent for cheaper than $2.80 a gallon. Water is about the only thing I can think of.
