Ignitor away

I'm having trouble with my car. It dies when I hit the gaspedal. Carb seems ok so it's probably the ignition. I wanted to try and change the ignitor from Leading<->Trailing, but I couldn't find the ignitors.

In my Haynes manual it says there is a box by the coils, but there isn't any. My car is from 1981 (FB), but it has been modified so things might have shifted in place.

What does a stock ignitor look like and how should I change it L<->T? Anyone got pics?

Check out the picture I posted in this thread:

https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/ignitor-tester-495974/

It's the ignitor tester I just built. The ignitor is the black (almost) square thing mounted on top of the box on the left side, with the white plug connected to it.

If the car idles fine, but dies when you give it gas, then your issue is most likely not the ignitor. Take a good look around for a vacuum leak, otherwise its most likely a carb issue.

Have you ever changed you fuel filter? Is this your daily driver. If not then I would check your fuel and filter. Your car would not idle if your ignitoin was the problem. Think about this is when you step on the ??? GAS.

Hmmmm I have had a blown ignitor before, it sucks, especially when it takes you like 4-5 months to figure out thats the problem (thats another story...)

Anyways it may be easier for you to use a timing light and see if all 4 spark plug wires are showing spark. If one of the ignitors is not functioning you will have spark on the leading and not the trailing or the other way around.

I finally found the ignitors. I tryed changing them around, but it actually made it a bit worse. At first I also thought it was the carb. I have a Mikuni on it and I opened it up, but I could not find any jams so the carb should be fine.

The fuelpump keeps on ticking so I don't think my fuelfilter is jammed. I checked the fuelline to the carb and fuel keeps on pumping out.

When I touch the gaspedal just a bit then the revs will go up with ease. If I actually press it in a bit then it dies. Even when I do this very very slowly. If I let of the pedal soon enought then it will idle before really dying.

I checked the resistance of the coils and it was 1.4ohms when cold. Seems ok 2 right? I don't have the ratsnest anymore. Just a Mikuni carb and brakebooster that use vacuum.

What could be the problem?

Get a visual confirmation that you have spark on the lower plugs. I want to hear you say "I saw it with my own eyes". If you do have spark, then you are looking at a fuel issue (either too much, or too little). Right now, I'm betting on a clogged jet, but that's only if you have good spark. Loss of your leading spark will make it very difficult to run too, so check that out first. You can check the condition of your plugs at the same time. Good luck.
