Iffy first roto turbo

I've had a JDM 12a j-spec sitting around for quite a bit. Pretty sure it has at least one apex seal not sealing right. But either way. I was planning on using the Hitachi off of it as a starting point for a first go around turbo set-up.

I know, I know. The turbo is too small, it will choke it in the high rpm range. I'm just trying to set this car up myself so I'm not shooting for 200 horses. But at the same time I know this is only a first step and I will eventually go beyond this.

And now to my question. With the intake I'll be using the turbo hits the manifold so I was figuring I'd either make a custom manifold(expensive) or just place a spacer between the block and exhaust manifold(cheap). And I was wonder if there was room to grow with this turbo. I think I read that it has a T3 footprint, is this correct? And are there any turbos with a similar footprint that would be a natural upgrade and so I could just re-use the (expensive) custom job. If no, I'd just toss out the (cheap) spacer, and then make a swell manifold.

Also I found a old post that this dude made a comment that you could replace the compressor with one from a 13bt. Power limitations to this one? And how expensive relative to a just getting a Tll turbo and then fabbing a manifold?

GIMMIE IDEAS

Thanks to all who read this post.

If you have the intake manifold from the JDM 12aT you can use the intake with the turbo you have or with a TII turbo and exhaust manifold, clears either one without a spacer. The nikki carb will bolt up the the JDM TBI intake manifold. To use the TII exhaust manifold you need to grind the bolt holes and exhaust ports to match the 12a exhaust gasket. You can get upgrades with bigger compressors for either turbo, TII or 12aT, you can't just put a new compressor on it though, it needs balanced.

I am considering using the stock 12at intake on a later EFI setup, if I ever get to it. I'm already devoted to a weber which I have the manifold, plenum, and intercooler for. Though the Tll would be a plus due to the fact its oil/water cooled vs. the 12at being only oil.

But as long as I can build a hybrid for Tll parts that gives me a bit of confidence dumping cash into a pretty exhaust manifold.

Thanks Coldy

Well, I don't know about dimensions of a RB intake, but you might be able to use one of those with a TBI setup and megasquirt to control it or a boost prepped holley double pumper. Neither of these is really cheap, but both would be quite effective I think, its been proven a boost prepped holley will do over 330hp with about 15psi boost on a hybrid turbo. Ask directfreak about it.
