Question Idle question...

I have an 84 GSL and it wont idle at 800 rpm. I havent tried messing with the carb yet so I first wanted to just get some feedback from you guys. The car basically always idles at around 1300 rpm and it isnt a smooth idle, its even a little ruff, it jumps about 100 rpm up and down. Any ideas? This is my first carburated car so its a learning experience for me.

If you haven't made any adjustments to the carb, start looking for vacuum leaks. I wouldn't make any adjustments either until a leak check is performed. If you need the carb manual, the link is in my sig line with the FSMs..

The A/C was eliminated by the previous owner... Where would I start in checking vaccum... Never had to do it on a 1st gen 12a before...

Ya, about the carb being adjusted... It probably was. They guy I bought it from said that the previous owner adjusted the carb for better gas milage. But so far I dont think its working . I am probably gonna pick up a haynes manual tommorow and try setting the carb back to stock settings.

Vacuum leaks can be anywhere. Get a can or 2 of carb cleaner with the spray straw and start squirting a little at a time. When the idle changes your close to the leak. It can be a gasket, vaccum line, fitting, etc.. Download the carb manual in my sig line, it's better than the Haynes. Sterling also has some good carb writeups in the FAQs.

If it has always done this, the previous owner may have adjusted the idle mixture (vs idle speed) to lean. Check the manual (mentioned above) for how to properly adjust this.

I would check for and eliminate the possibility of vacuum leaks before messing with mixture.

In the FAQ section, you will find a thread by Sterling (local carb God) that explains how to set the idle mixture and speed. A very worthwhile read...
