Idle and power loss issues.

Thankyou ahead of time for answering any questions I have. This is a awesome site, didnt know had so many users. I recently bought a 1985 rx7 gs model from my next door neighbor. He sold me 2 for $1500 bucks. One runs and the other doesnt. The lady that owned it before him pickled the engine.( she had someone pour deisel into the engine to perserve it is what i was told)When my neighbor got it, he purged the engine and ran it......he said it ran fine for a while until he started having problems with the exhaust. He eventually took the performance exhaust from the second car he had acquired and replaced the stock exhaust that was giving him problems. He said the stock exhaust he took off had 3 cat. converters........is this right? I went to Oreillys and they showed me a picture of the stock exhaust and it had only 2. Well he said when he put the performance exhaust on the car ....he had to cut off the air pump, and he said ever since he did that the car hadnt ran correctly.

I recently drove the car, and when I first turn it on it idles fine. As soon as I put it into gear.....the engine dies. If I feather the gas, and put it into gear while Im doing that , then I can drive the car as long as I keep feathing the gas around the corners and when Im coming to a stop sign. The guy plugged the 2 hoses the air pump connects to, but he said it was still drawing air from somewhere. When I drove it a second time I got on the highway with it and it drove fine for about 3miles, then it started to lose speed and stutter like it was trying to die but I kept giving it gas so it would stay alive. By that time Im only going about 40 and declining in speed quickly. I let it die cause i knew it was inevitable. I started it back up and drove for another 5 miles without a problem. When I came back from my sisters house, it did it the whole way home.

The man that sold me this car said that the air pump would not work with the performance exhaust that is currently on the car. I do not know a whole lot about cars so I dont know the brand or type of performance exhaust that is currently on the car. Is this true? This man has me thinking that Ill end up having to buy a new stock exhuast just to put the air pump back on! Is it possible to have this air pump on at the same time the performance exhaust is on? Or is it possible that the perf.exhaust is physically interferring with the air pump itself? These are both queations i came up with cause i know nothing about cars. Any help is appreciated ,Thnx.

Preformance exhaust with 3 cats? Talk about mis named!

Cut off the air pump? I believe it is like 2-4 bolts to remove...

If you have the airpump still on, keep it there and do not cap it, just let it run its course. If you want to remove it, take it off and run a yoohoo belt or a dual alternator pully. Yoohoo belt is cheaper, but more of a pain to get on, as the dual is a cooler look to it.

I dont really know much about how to fix your problem, this is just my 2 cents.

Ah, no problem. Misread by my part. I took off the stock exhaust and never looked at how many cats I had, then again, I had a 79 which had the thermal reactor.

Welcome to the forum.

You don't know much about cars but you are going to have to learn very quickly if you want to get it running correctly without paying someone to repair it.

1st thing you need to do before you start posting threads is alot of reading. When you read the rules of the 1st gen section(maybe I'm assuming that you read them) it gives the guidlines before starting a thread. It also introduces you to the search function and the other areas of this section such as the FAQ(frequently asked question section) which is probably the best source of starting information that there is for you.

More than likely there are probably multiple things going on with the engine. There is probably a vacuum leak, maybe a malfunctioning component such as the shutter valve or misrouted hoses. Could be other things going on also.

Before we get into any more I am going to post back a link that you need to read.

Then You need to take pictures of the engine from multiple angles so that I can look at them to see if I can spot any abnormalitly with the emission system. Please downsize them by using paint or something else. I am on dial up and it takes to long to view anything. If you don't know how to post pictures here or downisize them, don't ask me because it took me months before I did it,lol.

Here is the first link
https://www.rx7club.com/1st-gen-archive-71/other-what-look-when-buying-just-after-you-purchased-your-rx-7-a-601804/

Then go into the FAQ section and read the 1st and 3rd questions posted there. I would recommend that you review both of those also. It will give you a better understanding of your newly accuired 7.

To downsize in paint, press CTRL + W, and on the first two options (Stretch: Horizontal and Vertical) put in 40 on each. This provides enough detail for people on 1024 X 768, and still works on those with 800 X 600.

I had a friend who was stationed here for military duty. I am thankful for your service

The best bet for you at this point in time is the search button. I will search as well since I have nothing better to do at 2 in the mornin. Hopefully we can get your 7 on the road ASAP. This forum and its members are the most helpful I have been with!

None of the performance exhaust systems retain the use of the cats. As such, there is no need for the air pump, unless one needs to try and meet emissions, good luck with that.

As doc said, post up pics of the engine bay, particularly around the carb and rats nest. In my sig line, there are links to the online FSMs, carb manual and other rotary reading. DL whatever you need and start reading.

Fwiw, it's corps, not core.

I have read through some of the forums and mostly on the 1st gen. threads. Im realy just looking for a cheap way to fix this problem without having to buy a new stock exhaust..........BTW the USMC is referred to as the UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS or just simply the CORE. If your a Marine then you would already know that.

Touchy, touchy....and actually, you mean "you're" as opposed to "...If your a Marine then..."......sorry, couldn't resist the dig...

Trochoid, my Rotary Performance "header" ran with the air pump and a cat...but, of course, it was also a custom 2.5" exhaust from "header" to the rear built by Ari and Chris from that shop...
