Idle issue question.

Idle issue question.
I have a 85 gsl with a 12a the problem is some people who did not know what they were doing monkeyed with the car a lot they removed the cat and the air pump but left every thing else and only blocked off the intake hole now I started the car and it idled at 2000 re timed the car and cant get the idol below 1300 with the ignition timing completely retarded as far as it will go I tried searching for an answer but haven't found any thing maybe not phrasing it right my question is with the air pump removed like this would that cause the high idol I wouldn't think so but have seen stranger things before

this is not normal the car idled fine until my niece and her boy friend and my dad started removing things
also my 81 and also my 83 idol at 800 to 900 rpm like they should
also with the ignition timing compleatly retarted all the way the car should not run at all as it would be
to far out of time need help from some one who can help me

You are right, that is not normal. Rotarymaniac, your cars must have issues man...
Trying to reduce the idle by retarding the ignition is a bad idea. Put the timing back the way it was, then begin searching for the vacuum leak. I think you should probably start by reading the tutorial in the FAQ section, so that you understand how to finish the "rat's nest removal". You'll either have to complete the process, or you'll have to reverse what they have already done.
Good luck man...

that was my plan going to put a header on my 83 and use the parts from that on the 85 but I finally got to look at it in the sun light instead of after dark they didn't use block off plates just disconnected the hose to the intake so I think i found my leak

Like Kentetsu said, that is not normal. That is a false datum. With issues, such as a vacuum leak, yes, the engine will not idle, which people "solve" by raising the rpms until they are no longer in the idle circuit realm of the carb.

kentetsu,rotarymelon and cdrad51 thanks for the help haven't had a chance to correct the problem but I am sure that I have found it I have already read up on rats nest removal and will fix the 85 with the parts from my 83 this car needs to be stock and almost silent like my 81 wich is my dd because this is my girl friends car and she wont let me work on it unless the problem has been found because she doesn't want it screwed up any more than it already is

i need help on this rats nest removal thing. my car dose not idel at 800-900 rpm. it sit at the 1300-1800 rpm range and i fixed the teeter toter isue already for the secondairy thing. if some one can find it for me and send me the link that would be great. thanks

firebird knows what hes talking about its in there the only reason I started this thread is because the rats nest was left in this 85 and I really need to move it to be able to work on another car so needed to know what I needed to plug to move it

well I just got in from blocking off the leak on the intake and got the car to actually idol at 1100 Little adjustment at the carb now and new plugs cap and rotor + putting on a new air pump and cat and the car will run good as new thanks guys your help greatest I guess I'll have to change my signature because my girlfriend will have the newest first gen I'm selling it to her for the 300 I paid for it and to stop the verbal beat down she wont let me give it to her I tried and she doesn't believe in marriage any more thanks again guys

has anyone have this idel problem and solved it with the rats nest removal? i am asking because i am gonna need help from a friend and don't want to waste his time and get my hopes up for nothing.

I did a search for nest and that didnt come up.
Maybe I am doing something wrong but my faq and all I see there is the rules for the site and stuff like that.
