Idiot light?

My add coolant light has recently been coming on everytime I start my car and it stays on for about two minutes until the car warmed a bit, so I checked the coolant resevor box next to the radiator and naturally it was empty...so I filled it back up with coolant and the light is still going on when I start my car wtf?

there's coolant in there cause I filled it last weekend, could it be possible that the hose going from the box to the radiator is blocked somehow? I don't really know how the coolant situation on the car works, I have owned it for about a year 1/2 and the engine scares me to death to wanna touch it, I had the coolant flushed and filled last april and haven't checked it since cause the temp gauge has always been on the really conservitive side, never even reaching half way so I figured don't fix it til its broken.

Any help on whats up with my add coolant light coming on? Thanks guys

When the cars cold, take off the rad cap, and top off the rad, if its low, the light should go off, if is full, its the sensor.

^ok I will try that soon cause I don't really wanna fry my engine, what was the box I filled next to the radiator there for then? shouldn't that transfer coolant over to the radiator at some point?

Thanks I know these are prolly newbie questions but I have to learn and don't wanna learn the hard way

Since you stated the coolant tank was empty, this may indicate a pinhole leak in the return to the radiator. The return system is supposed to, but doesn't always, top off the radiator after it cools down.

You may also have a tiny coolant leak somwhere in the engine bay, so keep an eye out for any signs of one.

Yeah, its the overflow tank, but it only works to a certain degree for topping off the fluid in the rad. Especially considering it was empty when you filled it up, chances are your rad isn't topped off.
