Ideas for security on pushbutton start
Ideas for security on pushbutton start
I bought a 79 RX-7 two weeks ago and got it running last weekend. The bad part is that to start it, I use a screwdriver to turn the busted off starter relay to "Run", then use a jumper wire on the back of the starter relay to "hot wire" the car. To drive, I can only turn the key just enough to disengage the steering lock so that I can turn the wheels. The key can work its way back though and lock the steering while driving though.
I decided after looking at the price of getting new locks that I will just do a push button start and take off the steering lock. I want to have one, maybe two switches (Acc and Run) and a push button to start. I am wondering if anyone has any inventive ideas for security other than hiding the switches for car security? It is an old car, but I don't want it stolen.
Thanks for your help.

Even if it has, I am looking for ideas that are innovative and new.
For security, put a cut off switch somewhere under the dash to where you can easily reach it. For the ACC and RUN, put them in the ashtray
You could do itlike the bat-mobile with 100 different switches that do nothing, and pick 2 random ones that actually do something, it would be kind of funny looking too.

This link was posted by Jack Daniels on another thread. Useful for fuel cut off switch or ignition. Any 12V accessory.

Doesnt RUN only turn on the fuel pump? I think you could simply have a hidden switch for RUN and ACC and simply have them tied together. Could be totally wrong here though. It doesnt sound like it would really be too difficult to get it to work. As for the steering lock, I will PM you how that works.

get an aftermarket ignition inhibitor... usually these devices wont let you turn the car on until you insert a little fob into a dash recepticle...
works with any type of switching method... or to be different, use an aftermarket keyless entry system, that comes with the door lock solenoids.
use the door lock solenoid to switch a "master" ignition kill hidden inside the dash.. "unlock" makes car good to drive "lock" kills everything.

key switch
I work at a parts store (Napa) and I know that we can order in swiches that require a key to enable them. You could wire one of these up with your pushbutton, just hide the keyed switch somewhere and you have a relatively secure system.
