i think i need a clutch/help

my 84 se has 85,000 and everything is orginal. started to get a rattle from the trans housing when i'm out of gear and in gear and now 5th pops out here and there. the clutch feels as easy as my old civic too...but my question i have is, aside from getting a clutch is there anything else i should do while i'm down there. [ i'm new to the darkside]

Check to make sure your throwout bearing is good/replace it, and check to make sure your pilot bearing is good/replace it. I got my throwout bearing for 25 bucks (just search it on google), and replace your pilot bearing, because it is most likely worn out, and it would just be easier to do it now and not later because it is a 10$ piece, but it's a bugger to get out (I'm working on getting mine out). And don't forget the pilot bearing seal.

There are several clutch kits available. They have the clutch components and the pilot bearing, pilot bearing dust seal, and the throwout bearing. Along with a ckutch alignment tool.
If you're going to do the clutch, do all of that. (it's been suggested all over this board to do them while you have it open, hopefully you won't have to crack it open for another 85k) and possibly check the rear main engine seal while you're at it.

the trans pops out of gear when you are driving in 5th gear? thats an indication of a bad 5th gear, not a faulty lutch.

^^i would be looking for a newly used trans and not concentrating on the clutch as the primary cause for the issues you are having. while you have the trans out, inspect the clutch disc and the pressure plate and if worn, replace them along with the throwout bearing and the pilot bearing and seal.

How to check for worn clutch:

Drive on highway or anywhere where you can get into 5th at around 3.5k, floor it. If RPM's rise but car doesn't, clutch is worn.

Popping out of gear: Bad/worn dog teeth on gear

I think you may have a number of issues here:

1. Sounds like maybe your pilot bearing is making noise.

2. Maybe you clutch is going, test as Jeezus suggest.

3. Your tranny is acting up (popping out of 5th gear).

When you drop the tranny, replace the following:

1. Pilot bearing and seal
2. clutch and pressure plate
3. have flywheel resurfaced
4. front and rear tranny seals
5. throwout bearing
6. new fluid (synthetic is best)

Check the following and replace since its all apart anyway:

1. clutch master/slave. If one is bad replace both.
2. clutch master to slave line, just replace it its cheap
3. u joints on drive shaft. If they are the nonreplacable kind take it to a DS shop
4. rear end fluid (again synthetic is best.

If it were me:

1. Drain tranny fluid
2. Re-fill tranny with 50% Lucas gear oil and 50% Auto tranny fluid.
3. Try it out and see if it solves your issues

My thinking is that you may have a bunch of crud built up in your synchros, which is causing your problems. The solution mentioned above does a great job of cleaning out the tranny and getting things moving again like they should.

Don't mean to be a thread jacker, but..... How long do you keep the 50/50 mix in? Is it something you run and let it get cleaned out then replace with synthetic....or do you just leave it in?

What kind of ATF?

I run it full time in all of my manual trannies. This time, I'm trying Lucas ATF.

well the clutch is fine....5th pops like crazy. if i keep a load on it, it stays, also to put in 5th i have to move it past the norm to get it in gear. i'm getting a clutch kit anyways and seals. i'm just kind f*cked as far as getting my 5th fixed. the place down the road said 350 just to pull it and look. all i have for everything is 400 including clutch.....

You should give what Kentetsu said a try. The fluids wont cost you more then $25-35, if even that. I think it may be worth the effort before you put down $350 just to have the tranny pulled. Anyway good Luck.

or, buy a used trans from someone local by posting a want to buy ad in the for sale/wanted section. you may also want to look on craigslist and see if anything pops up.

well i found a transmission. i'll be getting in two weeks. picked up a oem exedy clutch kit today just cause i like to drive spirited and i would hate for the one thats in there to fall out in 10,000 miles. now i just have to look up the seals and a trans mount wile i'm there...

Trans mount is a good idea. My Exedy clutch (#10806) came with everything except the pilot bearing seal. It even came with an extra bearing that I had absolutely no use for.

You should also have the flywheel resurfaced when you replace the clutch, otherwise you could potentially end up with a very short lifespan on your new clutch. Or, if you feel like dropping another $400.00, go with a Mazdatrix liteweight steel flywheel, then you don't have to worry about resurfacing it. Which is exactly what I ended up doing.

my clutch # is 10025..and yes i'm haven the flywheel resurfaced. i wish i did have the funds for the lighted flywheel. but o well...i'm also changing the fluid in the rear end too.

well the clutch kit came today and looks good. eveything else also came last week. now i just need to pick up the transmission on saturday, 'o' and fluids...
