I'm in carb rebuild mode right now Tim. I have enough stuff for 3-4 Nikki's and when I saw that autozone lists a rebuilt Nikki for $500 I figured I might as well do them all while I have all the cleaning facilities and parts laid out. Organize my Nikki inventory. One down, three to go.

Once you get into it, rebuilding Nikki's is kind of fun. Not sure what I'm going to do with all those Nikki's however.

I'll post some more photos of my progress this evening, with any luck the intake manifold gaskets will be in and I can get to work putting the Silver One back together tonight.

I've never seen the "plastic doohickeys" before (I don't remove my venturi boosters, as Mazda says that's a no-no), I wonder what they do?

Not really Tim, it's all about the carbs. These Nikki's are really sensitive, they aren't no Del Horto's.

DD, I think those plastic dohicky's help with the emulsification. I can see why the Mazda guys don't want you to take them out, I totally scratched up the ones on my practice carb with the hook an wire approach.

The way you get them out is long soaks in Berrymens, then work them loose with some compressed air. An art, for sure.

So I rebuilt a pair of Nikki's each one telling me what I did wrong on the other one. Here they are:

And I plugged them in

And she runs, cool

Yes sir, she is running way more sweet.

Today I plugged in a vacuum line I missed yesterday and took her for a test drive. She is back.

Here's some rat's nest photos:

thanks J9, your suggestions led the way. I'll take her into Atlanta tomorrow morning, back to the daily grind. I'll let you know how the MPG's are doing, I'm hoping for the good old days of 24.

Excellent work Ray and now you have some spares to boot!

You know my preference but I can see the love it took to keep the nikki.

Just remember the darkside is always there waiting ...

Mardi Gras beads, for the win. Nothing like a well behaving Nikki to get you in the mood to ride a float.

The trip into Atlanta yesterday was excellent, that old Rocket Power is back. Gas mileage is looking good too, after 100 miles I'm still reading over 3/4 tank.

Will post more accurate data later.

Tim, fixing Nikki's will get me into Heaven. Can you say the same about Del Horto's?

Ray, this is completely unrelated to the actual content of your thread, but I just had to let you know your outstanding pictures of an assembled Nikki helped me get mine put back together after months of bashing my head against the wall.

Thanks Unevolved and sorry it took me a year to notice your post!

I see I promised an update on this. So here it is: 30,000 trouble free miles, 22-23 mpg, since I put the Silver One back on the road in August of 2010.

So a big thanks to all you folks who helped me figure out the carb problem, it sure has paid off.

Thanks for the complement Touring. I'm not planning to do any more on it beyond those pics, besides, it would be a pretty boring video since the carb rebuild takes several hours.

Your best bet is do some research first to get an idea of what's involved and where the resources are when you need specific help. Then follow the instructions and diagrams included in the rebuild kit and the FSM. The best help will come from having a spare unmolested carb to refer to when you can't figure out how something goes back together.

HC, you may have gotten an after market carb and manifold with that deal, post up some pics, I'm sure somebody will be able to identify it.

I think that the carb that is onthe car is a early style one. It has the idle speed and idle mix screws right on top of each other. The car is an 84 gsl. i have spark and fuel. i tried the compression test and it looked good as far as i can tell with a regular compression tester. but if i give it any more than the slightest bit of thortlle the car stalls. it will rev to about 6000.

This is the other carb. I am unsure if it is worth rebuilding.
