TN I own a rx7!

Hey guys yesterday I ended up picking up the car from one of the guys on the forums. Needs some TLC but I knew that going into it. Right now my main concern is getting the vacuum leak solved. It idles a little rough and sits between 1200-1500. It also came with a dellorto carb with intake and everything.

I could really use some help on rebuilding or tuning this carb. Supposedly its ready to go on the car but the guy I bought it from said that it ran worse with it on there than the Nikki.

I would post pics but its at my buddys house due to the original alternator going out when I got it back to his place.

If there is anyone is Nashville that could help me with this that would be great.

also the dreaded blinkers don't work but neither do the hazards so I was wondering if the blinker switch stops working do the hazards as well or do I have a fuse blown somewhere?

Thanks

congrats. what year?

you'd get more support for the Nikki, maybe you should give it a try - maybe straighten it out. the Dell'Orto is a pretty nice carb though. i found it easy to work on and once i got pointed in the right direction (most of the guys that helped me don't seem to be around any more), it was fairly easy to tune it. it's been quite some time since i needed to locate parts for a Dell though, so i don't know how easy it is to find stuff these days. i have a few threads around here on Dell-stuff, including one that i made with a whole bunch of related links, although someone did a more recent thread that totally blew mine out the water! i just can't remember the user's name though.

its an 85 GS which is what I really was leaning towards with the intent to make it a fun, autoX, and track day car. The rats nest has been removed but I don't think that all the vacuum holes have been plugged correctly.

Well I changed out the alternator today and went to start the car and it wouldn't start. I now think it is flooded so I have pulled the plugs and turned it over a few times. I am now letting it sit with the plugs out.

I really wish there was someone near Nashville that could come and help me out.

Are you sure you didn't accidentally arc the electrical system and blow the main fusable link? If the whole car is dead and not receiving battery power then that would be the issue.

Sorry to hear you bought this car. Car has quite a few issues that need attention. The reason nikki dont work right is the needles for air mix dont work right who ever rebuild it didnt do it right. Rebuild that delltoro and slap it on there. That fuel pump needs replace also.timing needs checked, and yes it probably flooded or try spraying some carb cleaner in the carb and it should start trust me.. Im in clarksville if you need help. Only problem is im busy as crap so you might have to bring it uphere..on the plus side car looks good in and out and its already se converted..

I know the car needs some work that is why I got it. Something for me to do on the weekends and something to do outside other than sit in front of my computer after I get off from work.

Fixed the starting issue. I think either the gas slowly seeps into the carb and floods the engine while sitting or I choked it and shouldn't have choked it and ended up flooding it.

Air mix screw does work but it has a vacuum leak somewhere because it idles at about 950 and I can't get it to idle down from that.

My plans for up and coming things:
fix replace turn indicator relay/computer (I need help with this either finding one or fixing it)
replace radiator and hoses
change all fluids (has synthetic oil right now... tisk tisk tisk)
replace fuel pump and wire correctly to run off of ignition
change out plugs and fix starter grind
get an alignment done
rebuild delltoro (with some help hopefully)
fix exhaust leak (racing beat exhaust)
replace both seats
all bushings and strut tower brace

I might be forgetting something. Eventually rebuild the motor once it goes and do some sort of port on it to make a little more giddy up and go.

I am setting back 300 a month to start doing the things that I want to to it. The list isn't in any order. My main goal is to get it reliable enough to start driving it daily or close to that and save some money in gas. (I know they don't do great but still better than my truck 10/15)

I think I paid a little to much with the amount that I am going to have to fix instead of upgrade but like you said it has been swapped to an SE and has very low miles.

The turn signal mess is the same unit that's in the late 80's/early 90's b2200. Easy score at most junk yards.

Radiator and hoses - top of the list, heat kills rotaries.

Synthetics are FINE, especially in your drivetrain.... but let's not start that old debate here.

I'd recommend a Holley Red pump and regulator. I've spent more replacing cheap Carters than I did on one Holley that never quit. Wire it up to a new relay.

Keep the receipt for your plugs. NGK's have a warranty and I've had parts stores replace them for free because they fouled, which can happen a lot.

Run premix. The plastic tubes from the OMP tend to get brittle and crack, and the jets can clog... it's good insurance for when that stuff fails and you don't realize it for months.

If you want to autocross it, it may be worth it to look into a late GSL/GSL-SE diff, axles, and rear brake swap.

Thanks for the info. I was actually going to ask what stuff everyone thinks I should do first. It has the SE brakes I know for sure but I will have to see about the suspension stuff.

What premix do you recommend?? and just one bottle per tank or how should it be mixed??

Also when I rev it up to the grandpa shift noise there is a puff of white smoke usually. not blue. could this be carbon burn off. only does it when revved that high.

What hoses do you recommend because I don't want to pay a stupid amount for the RB ones that are silicon but would like to put silicon ones on there so I don't have to worry about them anymore and the top hose mount on the radiator has been fixed which is why I am replacing the radiator. I found the thread talking about the one on andysautosport but wasn't sure if it would fit since the parts finder thing was saying it wouldn't.

Thanks for the help
