i need my car running

about 2 wks ago my car was very hard to start. it turned slowly like the batt was low. i put the 200 amp quick start on it and it did not turn any faster. i eventually got the car started by pumping the gas very fast while i turned it over.

my buddy and i were going to lunch and i didn't notice any more problems starting the car.

as i turned onto imperial valley, about 200 yrds from my school, i heard a popish clankish not good sounding sound that was not all that terribly loud. after that my car would not run hardly, i made it back and parked it.

the car runs very rough and there is a tremendous lack of power compared to normal.

my dad drove the car around the parking lot and said if it was a V-8 he would guess that it jumped time.

i attempted to move the dist. around and hopefully find something good enough to make the 45 min trip home but no such luck. now i have no idea of where the dist. is supposed to sit. but, i did discover that when i play with the wires going to the dist, something clicks on the pass side, it sounds like it is comming fromm the other side of the carb somewhere.

can someone explain how to set the dist, and what they think may be ultimate problem

thanx

To align the dizzy you need to pull it out then turn the engine by hand clockwise (facing the front of the engine) until the yellow timing mark lines up with the pin. There should also be a mark on the dizzy for you to line up. Stick the dizzy back in and fire it up.

I am not sure how accurate that method is as when i lined mine up to those marks it would baerly run and the timing was like 20 degrees off... I ended up using the guess and check method to get the dizzy in the right place. Took me about 2 hours...

If you haven't taken the dizzy out,,look at the plate where the securing nut goes on. You ~should be able to see where it was set by looking for the wear marks that the nut made on the plate.
For not turning fast enough when starting, look for a loose cable or bad connection (at batt. and on engine and on body and on starter).
However, that bad noise and then hardly running or very rough,,,,,,you may have lost an apex seal. Time for a compression test as well, if you don't see something else obvious.

Yeah I agree on the compression test..it's the only way to know for sure. You may have blown an apex seal.
