yes, you need the gas cap. get to the dealer and order you a new one. they're cheap and they work so much better than the aftermarket units. the part number is: 8871-42-250B. they run about $7...or if you live close to Ray Green, he may have one laying around..

I'd also check your hatch seal, and the sealing/metal around the filler neck, if you're smelling gas from inside while you drive.

Bad hatch seals are notorious for sucking exhaust vapors into the car when travelling at speed. You don't want to monoxide yourself into a stupor.

I have a spare but Dave's advice about getting a new gas cap from the dealer is the best idea, a new one will have new seals and last forever. Do it right and do it once. DD is right on about checking those other seals while you are at it, that CO is bad stuff.

Also you need to remember to put the gas cap back on next time, they are not idiot proof like newer cars that have the little tether attached. My routine is to slip the tab part on top of the cap into the gap between the rear quarter panel and hatch glass, pretty hard to miss that way.

Oddly enough I have never forgotten to put my gas cap back on, however twice when my mother had her Saturn I would be adding oil and put the cap on top of the engine and forget about it. I usually put my gas cap on the bumper or on top of the pump where its close to eye level. Gas can spill out of the filler tube if you take a right hander a little fast. I've seen it happen.

Hmm, guess I've found another use for the louvers. I set the gas cap on them. Haven't forgotten it yet. I'm guessing if I do it will make all kinds of racket when it slides off the louvers! LOL

Me, too. It's about the only place you can put it where it won't just slide off. On an SA you can set it on the bumper, but you WILL forget it there.

Once in a while I've used it to wedge the pump lever up, when the latch gizmo was missing off the pump handle.

I've lost 4 gascaps in 20 years, and had it ride home back there once or twice. One time, I saw it fling off and go flying away in the side-view mirror, when I was hitting a freeway ramp.

^^ your fuel system is under vacuum, you need the right cap, not just some generic one, though it will do for the time being until you get the right one.

I have a generic one and it seals. When you take the cap of you can hear the release of pressure.

I also run a generic cap from Auto Zone, and it works just fine. I replaced mine because the seal on my original one was rotten and I was spilling gas on hard right turns.
