i just cut the power steering belt

Damn that power steering box makes the steering really stiff.

Tomorrow i'll bolt off the hoses, i hope that helps some. But damn its MUCH harder to turn than a non ps setup.

Worth it tho, it revs quicker and seems to pull harder.

I'm sure the biggest change will come when i actually phyically remove the pump and box.

lots of people convert from manual steering boxes to ps boxes without the pump.. just for the better ratio.

And a hell of a good ratio it is too. I don't have to use a K turn for anything, I can turn around the gas pumps at Sunoco, and the steering feeling is highly responsive at speed. Plus it's a good forearms workout.

i may be getting rid of mine.

Adrenaline Life, have you taken out the pump, but kept the box? Did you bolt off the box, or loop the hoses? Mine is still hooked up to the pump, and i'm guessing thats what my problem is.

I'll send you a PM.

I just pulled out my PS pump and everything associated with it. I just looped back the high and low pressure side on the steering box.

I love the feel of it compared to my non P/S RX-7. Its tight and feels very responsive.

How do you loop it, does it just screw into itself? or do i need a special connector?

OK well i see how to loop it now, but there are THREE lines going into the box, not just two.

It goes on the engine side to the what used to be pump, from the pump into the cooling line, from the cooling line into some doohickey, from the doohickey, TWO lines exit. One seems to be the send line, the other is the one in question.

What should i do with the thrird line?

just make both ends dump into a tank full of ps fluid. That way your steering rack won't die from lack of fluid...

Yeah carl. There was a loop between the send/return, and it seems the cooling line. I dont quite udnerstand it, but it doesnt matter now.

I have taken it all out, and looped the send/return line. It works so perfect now.

Corners which i felt uneasy at 60 at w/ power steering, i now feel WELL within my abilities at 80. This is one of the bets improvements to my car yet.

I think i'm going to keep my PS box, chris.

Thanks for the help guys!

Now i can start cleaning the other half of my engine bay :-D

I found that out trying to cruise a tight parking lot while holding a very full cup of coffee. That evening, I found some styrofoam packing material- I taped to blocks together to make a low , wide squarish block- I cut a circular opening in the middle and taped a piece of thin cardboard to the bottom. Placed it right behind the passenger seat in the hatch area.
Haven't spilled a drink yet! I can just turn around with my right arm and drop drinks in the styrofoam. Of course, I don't test the limits of my tires with drinks in the foam, but it will get you through a parking lot!

Cool... Ive had 2 power steerings fail (on different SEs).. the first one blew up, not sure if it was a hose so out it all went.. the second one the pulley started making grinding noises then it seized up, so I snipped the belt and Im leaving the system in since I'll be doing an engine swap anyways.
Initailly it does take a bit of getting used to again.. a little more effort to turn the wheel, mostly from a standing start in a parking lot, but the gain is of steering response and feel..especially at high speeds
