so what happens when you dont vent the crankcase?

Rust on the inside of what?? I'm having trouble with my gas tank being rusty again.

Inside of the filler neck, that will fall into the oil pan. Along with the water that will end up in your oil.

I was getting lung mustard in my filler neck with my rat's nest. I removed it and ran new lines based on the diagram under the hood. I don't have anymore lung mustard. A happy moment.
