I failed emission testing.

Took my 84 gsl into the smog place today and i failed!!!

Heres the result's.
%CO2 %O2 HC CO%
TEST RPM MEAS MEAS MAX GP MEAS MAX GP MEAS
15MPH 2135 13.4 0.4 148 324 553 .89 2.39 2.02
25MPH 2189 13.6 0.1 123 274 456 .69 2.19 1.91

NO(PPM)

MAX GP MEAS
1191 2231 241
1021 2031 186

Also my timing was 8 degrees ATDC and they only allow +/-3. Also my choke doesnt work the cable snapped where you pull it out on the dash! so i failed that too! I had no clue they checked the choke?

Soo the choke was open during this test like the flap is open could that have cuased it to fail?

Please! help i have ten days to re-test!

Heres the part's i have already replaced(less than 100miles ago)

Fuel filter
Oil filter
Engine oil
Air filter
Spark plug's
Plug wires
Distributor cap
Upper and lower radiator hoses

Any idea's guys@!

Your choke may be a problem, the other thing is, check your exhaust and Catalytic converters. My car passed smog perfectly cherry and all I did was spend some money to get new cats and gave her a little love and a new distrbutor cap. O.o Haystack, Cali XD

Do seperate searches starting with emission testing. Then with failed smog, or failed emissions. I have responded and posted several very detailed lists of what to do and look for.

its good that you did the maintanence items. i dont think that smog stations check the choke tho.. make sure you drive it so that the engine and cats get really hot. some good fuel might help. also try seafoam to clean out the internals and cats. get your timing to stock specs too. i put in a new bonez cat and that helped me pass big time! good luck

Yeah here they will fail you just for the choke!! So i disasembled the front dash enough to get the chock cable out and it has broke from the magnet.

Im going to go today and get another one from the junkyard.

Also the smog guy told me that i would fail for not having that black plastic thing that pop's into your air filter assembly.

And finally i think my main cat is bad,it look's like its never been replaced!

Well i went to the junkyard and they had three fb's.

I got another choke cable, that shork round black thing that plug's into the end of the air filter neck. And a couple of small electrical things like the gas and hatch switches.

Came home and installed everything and noticed that a couple of thing's were disconected on my carb. One of them being the hot start assist was disconected from the carb and the motor near the fender.

And my throttle cable had too much slack! Well i got everything back together and started my car with the chock out and about 5 min later it popped back in.

But the car seem's to have a slightly rough idle...Soo i guess i need to search for a leak! Its not noticable really but i can tell.

Man i really think my cat is bad. They did a pressure test and a visual test and the cat is physicaly there but i dont think it wqorks like it should.

Im going to replace it!

Oh and you guy's may think im crazy but i swear my carb does not have an idle screw! I can clearly see the air/fuel mixture screw but there is absolutly nothing else there! I have removed the air horn multiple times and i can not find it! I know its supposed to be right next to the air/fuel screw but...no CIGAR!

You know, I had noticed the same thing when I thought about adjusting my idle... Do the stock Carbs not come with an Idle Adjustment?

From: here, where ever that is.
Oh, its threr, it just likes to hide. its not next to the af mixture screw, look to the right (towards the rear of the carb) and a little lower, and really look around, its there hidden under some hoses and cables, once you see it though you will smack your forehead.

It was not anywhere near where it was drawn in the FSM!!

Anyway it was set WAY too high so i re-timed the car and set it accordingly!

She run's sooo smooth now you should hear her!

also check the air control valve, if you shim it to put air into the exhaust ports all the time, it'll pass. the factory setup has the air pump air going to the exhaust ports, but only until about 2500rpms, so the carbed cars dont like to pass the cali test
