how wide of tires?

Well, I don't think that clearance on the rear is ever much of a problem. The front is where it will be questionable. On my 85 I'm running Sumitomo HTR 200 215/50/13 on the stock wheels.

what wheels are u running????
on std rims 205/60/13s all round
I reckon 215s on std width rims, would be slightly over tire-ing the rim
205s are killer on 8in wide, 5.5s almost too skinny as it is...
technically 215s on a 5.5 in rim may be illegal, it is in Aust!!!
Insurance companies suck so beware
hey Kenetsu where the black moulding strip runs along the side of ya car
at the black strip behind rear wheels, push/rock ya car sideways-back and forth
see how much the car wobbles on the tyre footprint..........ALOT ISNT IT
go find a miata with 14x5.5-185/60/14 std tires & do same push/rock test as b4
HARDLY MOVES HEY????
std rim width is same for both cars...
can only go a little wider in tyre without going wider in rim
but on 15s
15x7 on front with 195/50/15
15x8 on rears with 205/50/15
overall diameter is perfect, load ratings spot on
very easily go under gaurds F&R with correct offset wheels....

Kentetsu, how do you like the HTR 200s? I've been thinking of getting a set to hold me over until I upgrade my wheels. As far as sizing, I've done 205s before on stock wheels and they work pretty well. Are the 215s better?

I manage a rather large Independant wheel/tyre/suspension shop
and have been in tyres almost 15yrs...
had my 1st gen for just over 10yrs
first had 13s then 15s now 17s...
believe me i have tried everything on my car...
funny fact: TOYOs arent known at all for making tyres in JAPAN
theyre really well known for making comdoms!!!!!!!
TOYOs seem really popular in the US though????
dunno why, Bridgestone/Dunlop/Yokohama soo much better and race proven
i blame the Fast and the Furious....

I appreciate your concern, and you are correct in saying that the tire I run is technically too wide for the stock rim. All I can say in response is that it works. The 215s provide a noticeable improvement over the 205 in autocross and spirited daily driving. All I can figure is that due to the light weight of the car, contact patch is more important that sidewall flex.
Percent 7: They are a pretty decent tire, but you get what you pay for. These tires are under 50 bucks each, but they hold up very well under hard driving. I've got over a year of autocrossing plus daily driving on this set, and they are wearing well.

aint a rotor aint a motor
from memory:
15x7 (+10) 195/50/15
15x8 (+5???) 205/50/15
my 15in wheels are at my grandfathers garage i will measure them ASAP
Dont get me wrong the 215s will be a great improvement from std size,
but basic tyre theory says that 215s on 5.5s is overtiring
it ballons the tyre like "muffin tops"...and the wobble test i described
would demonstrate the unstability it causes
the contact patch is probably bigger because they tires lay over soo much you would be driving on the sidewall of the tyre as well as the tread ....hahahaha
if you were running em on 7 or 8in rims would be awesome
agreed you can get away with heaps in a smaller lighter car....
AE86s are very simmilar in weight and suspension as 1st gen
with all the racing/street versions i have seen, not one runs tires too wide for rims
they do the exact opposite and fit wider rims with narrower tires
except on the rear on drag cars where sidewall height/flex adds to traction
i cant think of any known tarmac car that would do such a thing either
just because someone will sell and fit a tire on a rim doesnt mean its right
just means they are happy enough to take your money.....
