VA Emissions and inspection problem

Okey here is my problem my rx-7 did not pass va emissions and inspection
The emission results
-------------15mph----------------------------------------25MPH---------------------
----------Limit-------reading------result-------Limit-------reading------result--
HC ppm-0212------485----------FAIL---------0385-------419-----------FAIL---
CO %----00.85-----3.25---------FAIL---------01.23------3.41-----------FAIL---
NO ppm-2769------298----------PASS--------2692-------214------------PASS--
--------Dilution------14.3---------Valid---------Dilution---14.3-----------Valid--

The reason the inspection failed is because the steering wheel comes out a bit

Any idea how to fix the emissions

BTW i have a 12a engine and i recently replaced the muffler with after market bosal

Any help is very appreciated

When you take your car in for a smog check, rotaries perform the most efficient when the engine and catalytic converters are hot and in great running condition. Make sure your timing is spot on, change your oil and filters, use good or new spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor.

Since your NO readings are low, CO and HC readings are high this says that your fuel mixture is too rich. Try leaning it out until it starts to stumble and then richen it until it goes away. This will raise your NO levels but you will be good with that anyways. Some members have said to have experiences that this procedure can backfire and lead to more HC and CO level output.

If all this is done and you still produce a lot more than the limit then you may want to look into getting your carbeurator rebuilt. The rebuild kits are around $20-40 so they are fairly inexpensive. Another thing to check is to see if your catalytic converters need to be replaced. Make sure your emission system equipment is working also i.e. air pump, air control valve, etc.

BTW the muffler does not do anything to clean emissions. It just quiets exhaust noise. Your catalytic converters do most of the work cleaning the unburnt excess fuel by using high heat and elements inside the cat to create a catalyzing reaction to the fuel chemical properties and burn them off.

Good luck!

Steering wheel play can be fixed by replacing the broken nylon pin with an aluminum dowel. Jeff20B had a good thread as well for a different fix. something along the lines or steering wheel play fix.

Could the mixture be too high because i used seafoam not to long ago
And since i cant really drive the car around i have not yet been able to waste all of the gas which contains a mixture of seafoam

Yes it could be and I suggested in my earlier post to try and lean out the fuel mixture. If you search or look in the FAQ there is a thread by Sterling how to tune the stock Nikki. I would recommend following these instructions to tune your carb to a proper fuel mixture.

I would also recommend you to drive around the car and run all the Seafoam to clean the engine and cats out. And then it wouldn't hurt to fill it half-way with some brand name gas with cleaning detergents (Top Tier grade gasoline) and drive your car for about 20-30 minutes of hard driving to get the engine and cat really hot to burn up most of the fuel.

Good luck.
