How to restore burgundy trim color?
How to restore burgundy trim color?
Trim is all that's left on this 85SE that I resurrected. Got a very nice burgundy cloth seat from the PnP.
Now I've got to restore the trim color, which is badly faded, especially the plastic bits in the cargo area. I may also have to change the door panel trim color (I scored good panels at the PnP, but they're a cream color).
We tried RIT dye on a sample and it just ran off like rain water. Also tried some rattlecan colors (dark red, wine), but it's too shiny (which I could solve with polishing compound) and not right hue.
"ColorBond" from BlackDragon doesn't have a matching color.
Anybody solve this problem? Any ideas?

Head to you local autobody paint supplier, take an unfaded part with you, or one that has a fresh looking back side. You can look through the color selection of SEM premixed rattle can paints, or the color chart that they have and have one mixed up that matches. SEM has a rattle can brown and gray that are near perfect for the S3 colors, thier burgandy isn't even close.
I redid the gray hard plastic parts in the widebody, and other than the deep scratches that were in the plastic, it looks brand new. Very happy with the SEM. The nice thing about having it mixed, they can add a flatner in the mix for whatever sheen/gloss level you want.
You will need to follow the prep instruction to the letter for durability longevity.

Here's a tried and true method that retains the original color pretty well and avoids the problems associated with painting:

Airbrush
I used Model Master paint from the local hobbie shop
matched the color and airbrushed my rear cargo panels
they turned our perfect. One light application - let dry
Then a full application as a second one!

i use some vinly spray (i think SEM, but its been like 5 years) in burgandy, its a really close match, and it holds up as long as you dont get stupid and use it on stuff you touch like the steering wheel, or shift ****, although it does ok there.
cleaning and degreasing everything is really key too
