How to remove side moulding...

I took off my side moulding about a week ago but there's a lot of gunk and tape left behind. I've tried some stuff my mom has for getting sticky stuff off and I've tried acetone. Neither have worked and I have a show to be at on Friday. What can I do to get rid of the tape and goo that's left on my car?

I sanded it with 60 grit sandpaper and power sander yesterday. And that still took a while.

Autozone has a product I believe is called Window Sticker Remover. This along with a dull razorblade worked well for a while. But in the end I ended up sanding and repainting anyway. Sorry!

Well I can't sand because that will hurt the paint and I'm definitely not repainting. Dammit.

I believe all that sticky crap is leftover industrial strength, double sided sticky tape and residue? Any adhesive remover should work; you’ll just have to spend a lot of time on it if you don’t want to damage the paint. In my case, I was building an autocross car, and planed on painting it anyway.

Does anyone know if any rx7s ever came with out the molding from the factory? I'm asking, because the racing class I am setting up for (CSP), says you can only remove trim if it was an update/backdate for your car.

I don't think so? But I run CSP as well and I removed mine. I doubt anyone will protest unless of course you go to Topeka and win!!

True. I just don't want to have to worry about it.

Thanks

Use a rag soaked in gas or paint thinner (put out the cigarette first). Peel off the big chunks first, these are bits of the double-sided tape they used to put it on with. Then soak the rest of the crud with solvent, let it sit a bit, then rub it off with the solvent-soaked rag. It cleans up fine with warm detergent or car wash, add some car wax and it looks like new. It ain't rocket science.

I knew fuel would do it since teh moulding under the gas door came off a long time ago because of it, but I thought it would take a long time and gas isn't exactly cheap. Maybe I'll do that this evening.

Diesel fuel will also work, but may not be quite as fast. It won't evaporate as fast either. A little harder to clean off, due to the oily film, but will not harm the paint.

I used goo gone, an old shop rag and elbow grease. It takes a long time, but is worth it since I did not damage the paint.

Heat Gun?
Low Setting First. With combination of Goo Gone.
Don't use Goof Off cause it could Eat Your Paint.

I have used gasoline and with my fingers I have rubbed the tape back out of place. Make sure you clean them good, don't smoke, don't smell the gas fumes. When you take the tape off the moldings, Store them flat and in the shade. If you leave them off too long or just throw them anywhere, they will warp on you.

I got a polymer wheel much like the 3M Stripe Off Wheel and it was taking off clearcoat and paint even with the least pressure possible. Imma give up until I get back from the meet. It's not liek my car is easy on the eyes anyways. What's a little black double sidded tape?

No they didn't.
But, if you wanna save weight, get your hands on some series one molding. It's a lot smaller and thinner so it'd weigh less. And it might keep you legal...

Heres an even better idea........
Take it to a car detail shop and ask them to remove it. They got this kick a$$ chemical called C-49 that takes that stuff right off....
I should know.....I detail cars at a car lot as a part time job!!!!!!
Besides if they screw up and wipe out your paint...........FREE PAINT JOB BEOTCH!!!!!!!!

On the money! Heat gun works great. Stay away from gasoline or other harsh products, they'll etch your paint. Goo Gone is the stringest thing I'd try. That's exactly how I removed my leftover molding tape.

If you plan on putting the moldings back on, use the 3M double sided tape. It's about $50.00 for a roll, but it's worth it. The cheap stuff absorbs water and will fail after a year or so.

One of my molding pieces came loose and I used acetone to get the crap off. Worked really well, though you have to be careful. After that I borrowed a buffer and made it nice and shiny before putting the strip back on.
