for a DD a nice stock first gen with everything up to par, id say you could get around 19-20 around town and 22-23 highway. i currently drive an all stock 85 GSL for a DD. i measure my MPG everytime i feel up. i do mostly city driving. im getting around 16.5-17.8 usually. i have some issues i need to fix and i have plans to boost those numbers.
there are easy mods you can do to really bost MPG and help performance. one is instalation of a header/better flowing exhaust. i i want something quiter so ill be going with RB. another very cheap VERY simple mod is to upgrade the ignition with a 2nd gen coil. this costs around $20-$30 and takes about 2 minutes. you could install an MSD for the same/better results but its more expensive.
i plan on going with the exhaust, 2nd gen coil, and electric fan to help boost MPG. i think with these mods i should easily be able to get 20 around town. my old 84 i had a header with exhaust and i usually averaged around 19 around town.
just some things to consider.

im getting 12 on the freeway and 8 in town on a bone stock 12a and i cant figure out whats killing my milage i dont drive it at 9k all the time ethier mostly down in 5k range and once in a while ill do a few higher rpm pulls to blow out some carbon

But on average a stock 1st gen is approx 16 city and 20 highway. They really do not like intown stop and go driving. The further you drive the better the mileage it seems. Or atleast drives of approx 20 miles one way.

What years are fuel injected? Has anyone actually done the mods spoken of and seen a improvement in fuel economy.
I want one for a daily driver and have found some realy nice ones, but I cant see getting one if it gets just as bad of mileage as my Jeep cherokee.
If its over 20 I could deal with that under and I dont know if I should.

1984 and 1985 are the fuel-injected 13B years for the RX-7.
A fresh engine DD 12A RX-7 will normally hit 18.5+ mpg in mixed driving. When the carb was still fresh from a rebuild, the '84 hit 20 mpg in around town driving and hit 25-30 mpg on the highway. 21 mpg in mixed driving was the norm. That was two years ago. I got it back from the person who never paid the balance on it and he beat it up pretty good. I had to replace the rear diff and tune the carb again, but the idle's still rough like I have a vacuum leak somewhere, that I haven't bothered to run down. It still gets close to 19 mpg with mixed driving, so I'm not complaining.

Look for vacuum leaks, this is the first thing I check when the mileage falls off and I usually find one. There is a rubber pipe that runs down along the fire wall behind the carb that is real hard to get to, since it is near the exhaust header it takes a beating. Fixing it alone if it's bad can give you 5 mpg more and a serious improvement in acceleration.
Also be sure all the other maintenance items are in good shape, tire pressure, oil, filters etc, it all can add up.
Oh yeh, I routinely get 23-24 mpg in my 84 GSL and twice I have managed to squeeze 390 miles out of a tank of gas, but I usually settle for 350 plus.

Alot of the carb'd ones will get you up to 25mpg on the highway.
Everything is based on your driving habits though.
The most I've squeezed out of some of my previous Se's was 23MPG.
I even managed to squeeze 25mpg out of one of my previous GSL's with a Rb header and mikuni 44PHH on the highway. 250 mile trip one way.

If you were looking for a daily driver first gen what would be the best to go with. I know nothing about first gen rx7's. I want the one that typically gets the best MPG.

Terrified.
GSL with a good rebuilt Nikki carb would probably be your best bet. Even with an upgraded carb, just make sure the carb on it is in good shape.
If you get a chance to get a GSL-SE, though, get it. SE's get low to mid 20's as well, and are a hell of a lot more fun.

Or if a full system is not in your budget, then a cat replacement pipe.
2nd gen leading coil mod.
Electric fan will probably give you better MPG in the long run.
Good flowing air cleaner element like Kn's.
