Question How to identify the year of my engine?

I never actually found out for sure the year of my engine... It is a 13B 6-port engine with the dynamic chamber on top "13B INJECTION / Mazda".

It's been speculated its from an S4 or S5... but how do I know for sure,

The reason I'm asking is because I need to know what transmissions I can fit onto it... mine is about to die,

Perhaps there are some tell-tale small differences between all the engines, so I can work out what it is.

Cheers,

Paul.

If it's just a box for a chamber, it's GSL-SE.

If it's a rounded, ribbed box, it's Series 4.

If the intake manifold looks like something from Aliens and there is no linkage rod on the oil metering pump but instead some wires coming out of it, it's a Series 5.

That's easy. Any N/A transmission will directly bolt to any N/A engine. Clutches even all have the same input splines. The transmission is mainly determined by the chassis - '79-80, '81-85, '86-91. But off-year swaps can be effected (N/A only!) by changing the tail housing and shifter assembly.

Alrighty I'm willing to bet Series 4 then based on this:

So since my chassis is 82, I should be able to bolt on anything from an na 81-85 are you saying?

Cheers

Yes. ('83-85 Turbo might work too, since they used the same "smoothcase" transmission)

A transmission from a '86-91 non turbo (did you even get these, or were all of your N/A second gen's automatic?) would also directly fit IF you changed the tailhousing/shift linkage. You can't put the tailhousing from a N/A transmission on a Turbo transmission (1st-gen Turbo notwithstanding).

Ok. I am getting another transmission next week I will see about rebuilding mine with bits from this one...

I will also need to do the clutch!

So, just referring back to what Peejay said, any clutch kit from an NA should work, right? Are the bolt patterns the same etc.?

I was thinking of maybe one of the following:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33730

or

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33564

Just to go over things again, the engine is a S4 13B 6 port, transmission is probably a series 2....

Cheers

So, when you swap a 13bt into a 1st gen, how well does the turbo tranny line up to the existing shifter hole?

It does not, you will have to cut a little bit into the tunnel.

What is your planned usage for the car? Will it see a lot of drag strip time, autocross, roadracing, or just a daily driver. Button clutches are not friendly for stop and go driving, but if you're going to the strip often, the stocker may not hold for long. Also for concideration is current and future mods.

If you're going to the strip occasionally and doing mostly daily driving, I would concider a stage 2 clutch, something with a pressure plate that has approximately 60% more clamping pressure and a stock type disc. If you still want the button clutch, go for a 6 puck with a sprung hub, easier for the street. It won't have as much of that on/off engagement that a 4 puck, unsprung disc has.

Very sharp car by the way.

Thanks for a reply ! (at last)

The car is really my daily driver, no planned dragstrip action, however I may consider taking it to easternats one of these years... but probably never. I can't afford to pour money into the car lol.

So yeah, just daily driving, some hill action etc. So I probably don't want the button clutch.

Needa get something pretty soon though... and I've no experience with clutches, guidance would be awesome, thanks!!

Paul.

You're most welcome. That's what it's all for. There are plenty of threads on clutch installs, just don't go beating on the flywheel to get it off like some of the members suggest. (One of my pet peeves, a bigger hammer is not always the answer.)

I'm just wondering if anyone could tell me about clutch compatibility. What will actually fit my S4 13B... Or do I need to get off the tranny and have a look what's there?

:| I would like to not have to pay some rotary shop $350 for something that I Could get cheaper elsewhere and fit myself.

Any NA clutch from S2 on should work. 225mm disc if I remember correctly. I just put the clutch from my S4 into my S3, they are the same.

Awesome. Now I need to find somewhere to buy one cheap... I'm in Australia, and importing one may actually be cheaper! I was quoted $270-$350 USD for all parts replaced...

Any ideas? Cheers!! Shipping from USA to here is about USD$94... so it still could be cheaper :P
