How I spent my weekend... Learning

So since my 7 wandered across my path I have had many sleepless nights reading and searching this forum. That search button is my new best friend! My rex came to me very strangely (other story) however the price was right ($200) and let me tell you I had no idea what I was in for...

It din't run when I got it so thats been the last 2 weeks...that was fun!

And it also had a lot of rust... alot oh ya thats the reason for this post for those of you still reading...

So I thought it was time it saw some T.L.C. I have never done any body work before so it was going to be a long weekend...

Sanded and ready for POR 15

Por 15 drying

Ok I can live with that for a first try. Now for some paint...

Not a perfect match but I can feather it out.... OR!

This shot is one coat before the final coat and buffing but it still looks better than when I started I believe.

All and all it was a full weekend and 3 after work nights. It's not a factory repaint done by pros because I'am far FAR from it. I learned a to over this time and I'm happy with the outcome. Just wanted to see what everybody thought.

Open to any questions and or flaming/ comments... lol

More pics to come when I take it out on a nice day.

Jordan

Good job. Its good to see someone bringing an Rx7 back from a place most would leave it for dead.

Are there still some areas that have the original paint showing? For example the door area/trim of headlights/hood..?

Great looking job, it looks way better than what you started with! Im planning on repaintnig my SE the factory tender blue in the next year or so. My dad has a nice gun and has painted a few of his previous cars.
The only thing I would say about DIY paint jobs is its best to use lighter colors since they dont show imperfections in the body work and paint as much.

Thumbs up

From the looks of what you have done, great job. I plan on painting mine also. What type of paint, did you prime, how far down did you sand, and cost of project? I like seeing this post as there are lots on the mechanics of rex's but not many on how to improve the looks. On mine I am getting the mechanical parts taken care of first (runs great now and working on front end and brakes). Wish there were more threads like this. Thanks for posting. Gives me hope. Dan

You have inspired me!

One question though; how is the rest of the car rust-wise? Have you checked behind the storage bins yet? Having that much surface rust, I would be concerned about the structural integrity of the car. Hopefully it's not too bad though.

Very nice work!

Cool!

I'm redoing mine as well, just s l o w l y. Good thing I don't have to drive it every day, as it would NEVER get done.

Post some outside/daylight pictures when you get a chance so we can check it out.

Ya there was so much rust I was expecting the inside to be even worse. So I searched and pulled the bins and checked the drip rails and was shocked to find NONE! Very cool! I think she was put away dirty and wet and left to sit...

So off I went to the body supply store!. All I can say is por 15 is great stuff. I'm going to get all the buffing done tonight and we'll see what kind of shine i can pull out. I just wanted to "touch up a few rust spots" 96 hours later I had a black 7... lol

[QUOTE=Theknifemaker]From the looks of what you have done, great job. I plan on painting mine also.

What type of paint,
High gloss black... Spray can

did you prime,
Yes more coats of "filler prime" on the spots thats had por 15 on them.

how far down did you sand,
Till my arms fell off... Did it all by hand. I just sanded the body work spots till even with the factory paint and scuffed the factory paint with 220

and cost of project?
por 15 starter kit $26
other misc body work stuff $60
sandpaper $40
paint $120
masking plastic and tape $12
Buying my friend beer to spray my whole car in his heated garage $42
Sitting drinking said beer staring at my now rust free car... Priceless.
