How hard is it, really?

How hard is it to port your own engine during a rebuild? How easy is it to screw it up? Is it something you are just better off leaving to a professional?

I didn't do it because it was my first rebuild...but I plan on doing it on my next rebuild. I really think that if you have decent templates and a little patience, you can do it.

Just my $0.02.

from what i have gathered on this, they use carbide burrs to grind in a shape and open up the intake and exhaust i think. never done it to a engine but i had it done to mine. i work in plastic injection mold shop adn we use carbide burrs to spot in both halfs of the mold. if you take it slow i think you can make it look good and be right, but go to fast you can screw up fast. if i were you i would get a old housing and give it a try first, if it looks good and your confident go for it cant hurt.

I've watched my cousins do it before, and I think I would be able to do it if I wanted to. In fact, during my next rebuild I may smooth out the ports, though I don't want to do a real porting.

Just take it slow and careful, and you should be fine.

My first rebuild, I did a bridgeport. Never done either one before, nor watched anyone else do it. So far so good. Carbide burrs, sanding rolls, a good die grinder, compressor, time, patience and a lot of research. Practice on an old set of irons first and take your time.

I'm planning on doing it some time in the future, and from what I've read, it's not too hard. You can even do it with a dremel tool, but it takes longer. One benefit of a dremel is that if you slip or something, it doesn't cut very fast, so there won't be much damage done. Nopistons.com has a lot of info on porting.

if you have access to a big compresser it is very easy.

Its not hard at all if you take your time. I have not actually done a port job before, but after seeing many pictures and researching a lot I think I would be confident in doing my own port job. Just take your time. Its not a race to get the engine done.
