how do you remove the alt pulley

how do you remove the alt pulley, i have s5 alt witha dual pulley that i bought for jsut the pulley, and it actually creates less voltage than my stock alt and now its starting to crap out. last night when i got out of work, the voltmeter was swaying between 12 and 14. it could have been a belt slipping but it was doing it at time when you wouldnt expect two belts to slip, like 2k, and idle. so i want to put my stock alt back on with the dual pulley, but i dont know how to get the pulley off without it just spinning the assembly.

thanks

Unless you have an air impact or electric impact it is not likely you will get it off.

Besides getting a big pair of channel locks and having a friend hold the pulley in place while you attempt to take the nut off. I would just take it to the local Auto parts store, they can do it in a couple of minutes.

Like Doc says, it ain't easy without an impact wrench, but before I got my compressor I did one by fitting the pulley into a bench vice, with the alternator hanging down. This took a little arranging but eventually I got a good enough grip on the pulley to loosen the nut.

If you have to do it yourself your prolly gonna have to take the alt. apart and put the rotor in a vise with the front housing still on. CAREFULLY put the rotor in the vise! Don't tighten too tight or you'll warp the rotor and junk it. Then just loosen the nut with a wrench or socket.

Oh wait, I remember how I did it. I put the pulley in a bench vice (like sunroof says, not too tight, you don't want to damage the pulley) but I put it in with the alternator pointing UP (not down), then got to the nut from below with a ratchet and extension.

That sounds pretty good ray, That way you don't have to take the alt apart! That'll save A LOT of time!

I just take them into work(AutoZone) and use the electric impact. It saves alot of headache

Impact for the win. Anything else can damage the pulley (when you grip it with something) or the internals (when you shove a screwdriver in there to lock the fan or spinning magnet doodad).

I agree with Jeff, bench vice for the newbies, impact wrench for the pros.

I think the doodad you're refering to is the rotor..... lol Ad I don't ever sugest doing that!!!! If you do get your hands on an impact just hold the pulley with your hand nice and tight........ It won't spin the pulley if you've got a nice firm grip on it.

I hold it with my foot. No sense in hacking off fingers if it slips
