Horsepower gain question..

Hi guys, I've just joined the forum.
I've owned my series 2 (manual 12A) for around 3 years and have just started to mod it.
It was completely stock when I purchased it, and getting a bit tired now.
Its currently in the shop getting worked on and I'm wondering if anyone can take an educated guess at how much HP I can hope to gain from the following mods-

The stock carb is being rebuilt, the secondaries welded mechanical and re-jetted.
Heavy gauge extractors with 2x4" hotdogs and 2.5" cat-back.

Also having KYB sports shocks and lowered kingsprings installed, since the original system was still in place.
Any info on what I can expect from previous and updated power numbers would be fantastic, also what other mods I can gain decent HP with.
Thanks for any help guys!

Quick question regarding the fuel pressure regulator (on this topic)...

Are you guys running return or returnless regulators?

The fuel system is still stock too. Not honestly that sure what it entails there. But I will definitely look at replacing the pressure regulator and the pump then.
Locally, I've often heard that a VL Commodore fuel pump is the best replacement for a 7, but again, I wouldn't know enough to be sure. Is this a good way to go?

Here's one of the more popular ways to handle the fuel delivery problems:

As far as modifying the Nikki, let's just hope they know what they are doing. I'm using a Sterling carb ( www.sterlingmetalworks.com ) and love it. He really does a great job at getting the most out of these carbs, and does extensive work to get it there. The cost is very reasonable, so might be worth checking out if you aren't already commited to having your shop do your carb.

Good luck, and welcome aboard. Let's see some pictures!

Hey,
Thanks a lot for the fuel pump info. That'll be great. Also gonna yank off the belt feeding the air pump this arvo hopefully. Gonna go pick my baby up from the shop today. Yeah, I was already committed to the Nikki by then, but the guy at Selectmaz is an expert and recommended this as the best option. Plus since I'm in Melbourne, Aus, getting parts sent here will be hella pricey. Guess I'll have to wait and see. I'll post ya up some pics as soon as I get her back. Thanks guys!

Sterling just modifies Nikkis. Like realllly well. Shipping wouldnt be too bad if you would be willing to wait awhile.

Got my wheels back yesterday arvo... My god. What a difference. The carb was clogged and full of crap. But its all been done and sorted. Almost doubled the horsepower from the crap 50 it ran on the dyno first up. Goin back to see Izzy again in 3 weeks, he'll have a RB air cleaner to go with the RB twin pipe exhaust & headers that went on. Air pump also went in the bin. Lol
So next question is, with it going back again in 3 weeks anyway, what's next on the list of mods do you reckon? What's gonna buy me fast, decent amounts of ponies? Izzy is expecting around 120hp just from adding the RB cleaner.
Electric fans? Bigger fuel pump? I've got a budget for this round coming of around 1-2 grand. Would love to hit up around 150+ if possible.

There is a lot of power hidden in the ignition system, if you know how to find it. A 2nd gen coil would help quite a bit, and would be dirt cheap...

I have MR2 efans on mine, and they work and look great.

Do you just replace the stock leading coil out of one from a second gen? Does that really help much?

Actually it would be 2GCDFIS if you're using a second-gen coil. DLIDFIS uses three of the stock coils instead of the normal two. Both work quite well.

What is different about the second gen coils that allow better spark? Do you need to change anything else other than the coils?

I've been told in the past that coils are very pricey (mazda ask around $400ish I've heard). What sort of gain do you think could be achieved from the coils? I've got 2 weeks to work out what is next on the list of things to do... Damn mod bug bit me good. I'm gonna be soooo broke... Lol

The 2nd gen coil is actually a very simple mod.

Get a 2nd gen coil pack (leading), and separate the coil from the ignitor housing. Mount the coil, then move the wires from the stock leading coil to the new one. Run the plug wires from the new coil directly to the spark plugs (bypassing the distributor cap). There are instructions around that will make this installation a lot more difficult, but this is how I did it and it's working great for me.

Now your leading ignition fires directly to the plugs, rather than going through the cap and rotor. This improves the power of the spark. I also believe that the coils themselves are capable of a stronger spark than the stock coils, but running directly to the plugs from the coil is probably what provides the biggest boost.

Hope this helps...

So its basically modding to coil on plug for the leading two... That does sound quite useful. Thanks again. I'm gonna have a rocket by the time you've finished passin on the basic junk I can do at home. I'll get to workin on that in the next couple of days. Cars goin back to the shop in about a week. Hoping I can get a fair bit more done then too. Cheers again!
