Horn Wiring question...?

I have a 83 that was destroyed by going completely under salt / ocean water during a hurricane. I've since changed DAMMMM NEAR EVERYTHING to bring this shitbox back to life.

What I'm trying to do now is get the horn working so I can pass inspection soon.

I have a Haynes manual and can put a picture of the wiring diagram if needed. What I make from it is, *I think* there's a horn relay and the horn button is grounded... When you press the button you complete the ground to trigger the relay to send 12V to the horn...???

I'm no longer using the original wire harness. Every wire in the car I re-ran and I don't have a horn relay, so I'm trying to get the horn working from scratch. The steering column is a replacement and I do have a new directional piece w the plugs that go into the back and about half a foot of harness wire on each plug.

There's a Grant detachable steering wheel currently on it. Maybe I have to look into that not working right, idk..? I figured I'd make a post and hopefully someone could chime in while I go tinker some more.

Just add a weather-tight relay near the horns, supply a ground from your aftermarket steering wheel horn button, and 12V from the battery to the relay then the horns.

Yea sounds good. Except I can’t find any wire coming out the back of the directional column that gets ground w the horn pressed…. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m going to give it another go this afternoon. Thanks for the response.

The center of your steering wheel would have this. Not sure if your steering wheel is after-market or not. Pull the center cap of the sterring wheel off and you'll see the grounding ring as part of the horn button. It's this grounding wire that triggers the relay.

Since you redid all the wiring, you probably need to determine if this is one of the wires that go removed. Factory wiring diagrams can be found here: Foxed.ca

After a good investigation I’ve come to the conclusion that my Grant detachable steering device is jacked. I gave it my best effort to fanagle something to get the push button in the center to work like it normally should but the pins that make contact when your remove the steering wheel (anti-theft) are broken. And the circular attachment that rides the pin on the column when you turn is burned through the conductive material. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I guess it’s going to be a auto parts store push button for now. 😊 Ohhhh and it did wind up being the right wire that the manual said it was… Green w a blue stripe.

As a test, you should be able to manually ground it out and the horn work. I would make it work manually first then tackle the horn button portion.

The horns do work when I give 12v to the nipple coming off the actual horn not ground. Seems straight forward off a new push button.

Install that relay near the battery to supply the 12V to the horns then hunt down where that ground wire on the column goes. If it goes nowhere, run it to the relay. Then all you have to do is ground that wire to test the horns. You can buy the horn button ring from several places once you know it's going to work. You can also just wire a button. A button is not the best solution but goes work.
