Horn Limiter
Lil help, I thought I was crazy at first but but its true.
When I first got the car it would buzz at the rev limiter. Then no alarm at all for a while.
Now, The horn blares at the rev limit. Before I start diggin for shorts and gremlins has somebody experienced this?

mazda installed a redline buzzer on every 7. their justification was that since the engine is so smooth and is easy to redline without noticing(for those who dont car to pay attention to their engine rpm), they wanted a little warning. the buzzer should go off right around 6800rpm.

We had a discussion several months back. It appears from the parts fiche that only the '79 and like '84-'85 have the buzzer. The '80-'83 do not. Don't know why that is. Maybe the buzzer scared too many people, so they ditched it. Then thought they should have it and brought it back.

This is one thread about it. I believe there is another floating about, but I could not find it. For a long time, everyone (myself included) believed that all 1st gens had the buzzers. We thought that maybe some just didn't work due to age. I remember a few years ago, IanS pulled his cluster ('82 or '83, I think) and he took pics showing the circuit board for the buzzer, but no components soldered into place. We didn't know what to make of that.

I went back and looked at the parts fiche, and the tach changed between 79 and 80 (removed buzzer). It appears that also the 81-83 had no buzzer. Then the 84/85 cars got the buzzer.
The 84 cluster/dash is quite different. You could swap the whole dash, wiring, etc. if you wanted. Another option might be to adapt the '79 cluster (different layout than yours). Since the circuit board seems to be in place, you could look a a cluster w/ a buzzer, find what resistors, diodes, etc the cluster uses and use that to build the overrev buzzer circuit for your car. Then just swap the actual buzzer over to your car and you're golden.

Yeah..weird, huh? Don't know why they would do that. Anyway, if I can dig up a spare cluster (naked one), I could do a how-to for adding the buzzer. You wouldn't even have to get the buzzer off another cluster..you could rig up a generic buzzer from RadioShack (or similar) and use it once the rest of the circuitry was in place.
Oh..and the strange thing is that all the wiring diagrams show the buzzer. They probably had it in the '79 diagram and then just didn't bother to change it during updates..or maybe other parts of the world maintained the overrev buzzer from '80-'83... who knows?

I remember driving my 2nd SA (79) back from Atlanta Georgia, to Charlote, North Carolina. It had a faulty gauge cluster, so it would read revs and whatnot, but would occasionally just 8k+ redline itself and BUZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Turned the car off, then back on, and it would work. Too bad South Carolina was nothing but BUZZZZZZ the whole time. My 82 doesn't. I had the cluster replaced with a 130mph (iirc) cluster and it still doesnt. I have the 82 cluster with the 85mph speedo handy if anyone wants me to take pictures of it.

Kent. I have too thought of using a generic buzzer in the 80-83 dash. I have also thought about using the shift buzzer curciut to maybe trigger a shift light. If it's possible, let's try to do it both ways. I have a SA and FB to experiment on. Just let me know what you think
