Hood idea

No, i'm not making hoods. I had an idea to lower engine bay temps by having the hood up a bit. You know when you unlatch the hood and its about 3/4 higher now unlatched. Well, I was thinking how you keep it that height and still have it latched. Any ideas on what would work? What do you guys think?? I was thinking, heat rises and if theres a little bit of space, the hot air will leave.

It'll work when you're not moving. At speed, though, it might be a bit counter-productive. A lot of S13 guys do that and all that happens is, because of the relatively high pressure air at the base of the windshield, cool air gets sucked IN. Weird, I know, but believe me, the air in your engine bay, heated as it is, is at a lower pressure as the air hitting the base of the windshield at any respectable speed.

I vaguely remember someone mentioning something like this and saying they added washers to their latch and it rose the hood up a bit.

Hmm, thats sweet nick. Notice any difference after your done heat wise? I'll look at my latch and think of some possibilities like washers.

at speed, yes. But going 'round an autocross track you won't build the pressure wave to pull air in - you're too busy goung around corners.

Me and my friend did that on the way to denver once. It kinda works. Until you hit slower speeds, his exhaust seal was busted so it kinda just filled the cab with carbon monoxide.

First question why do you think you need to reduce your underhood temps? Are you racing, hotrodding or abusing your 7? If you shim the latch, eventually you will end up with a bent hood since it will no longer be supported at the corners.

I always thought that was an old hot-rodder's trick to keep temperatures down.
For extended periods of time that's kind of foolish because it won't be supported.

I did it bc temp stayed about half way and was having some starting problems so I was leaving the car running while sitting in grid.

I dont abuse the 7. If redline once everyday is abusing the 7 then ya. But I take care of her and you can ask all the people in vegas. Everybody is amazed of how well taken care she is. I dont think I need to now. I did have halfway temps for awhile but since I got the bonez race pipe, tempos have been down due to no backpressure I think from the cats.
