If it's still getting it's signal from the trailing ignition, I'd guess your trailing plugs aren't firing when it goes flat on you. Either that or as you're guessing, some wiring gremlin. I'm going to be redoing my wiring this weekend, AFAIK I just need a switched 12v, Tach signal wire and the rest can/will be all new wiring.

AFAIK = as far as I know.

I'm running a carb'd GSL-SE, so I have a lot of wiring already axed. The wire I'm using is 14 or 16 gauge, not positive which.

The way I see it, the only thing you'd need to keep is the switched 12v and tach signal.

Use a switched 12v source to energize a relay to deliver 12v direct off the battery to the + of the coils and the B terminal on the GM Ignitors I'm using. The - terminal on the coils goes to the ignitors C terminal, and the ignitors W and G terminals go to the pickups in the Dizzy. The only wire from the main harness that needs to stick around is the one for the tach signal.

As I go, I will be removing more and more of the stock wiring, and replacing as much as I possibly can with new wiring. 22 year old wiring is bound to have some gremlins, whether they be corroded inside, or even possibly wet.

so you would hook it to the key igniton for the relay

could i hook the -terminals on the coils to the j109 igniter is that where those yellow negitive wires go to anyway
since i have a aftermarket tach i wont need that part of the harness and jusy have it taped up

iv never seen this tach signal wire before is it spliced to the negitive wire on trailing coil

I'm not sure where it is either, I honestly haven't looked. I know it's on the trailing side, so I would assume if it doesn't split off from the ignitor, it probably comes off the coil - terminal. If not, I'll be ripping some tape off anyhow, so I'll find it sooner or later... hehe.

I haven't put them on yet. I'm doing (most of) it this weekend. I'm using gutted (dead) j109s to pass the pickup signal out of the dizzy to the GM Ignitors which I am going to mount on a bracket on the shock tower. The HEI ignitors had a lot of trouble with overheating, perhaps yours weren't passing off enough heat mounted on the dizzy?

I'll let you know how it works out for sure when I get it done. I'm hoping it works fine, but if not, I may look into doing the DLIDFIS w/ j109s.
