Tach works off the trailing. If the wires in the bay are good, you may need to pull the cluster and check behind it. There is a single wire with a bullet connector coming off the dizzy, make sure that connection is clean and solid, then trace the wire to the fire wall for any breaks or abrasions.

the little Bullet Thing..is just a One Wire connector, that looks like "a bullet" for the Male end of the connector..goes into the other half of the single wire Connector(female)...An example..the sensor on the bottom of the Rad on an S4..the pins on it ..YOU can use Female type bullet connectors if you break the Wires to the sensor.(overdone, but I think you should get the Picture)

I believe the wire he's referring to is the signal for the Tach. If it's not making a good connection, it might explain your tach jumping around like that.

well what i think trochoid's refering to is theres a lil capcitor type thing and the right side which has a wire and a bullet like connector but i dont see how this gives signal as it only has 1 connection and screws to the side of the dizzy

Well, I went to look and found what you're referring to. Mine is disconnected, along with vacuum advance, and my tach works fine. It was getting jumpy in high RPM, but it was missing up top. Adjusted the timing and it's perfect now

BTW, I still have the stock ignition setup, not Direct Fire yet.

that capacitor is the condenser it keeps you from hearing engine noise through your stereo (electrical feedback). It's not a necessary part but it does a job. I finished my direct fire wanna see it? It's gonna be a minute dial up sucks.

well im just postin a pic of my new tach installed ill improve it later but for now its positioned where i like it and hope others like it aswell
i didnt go for the big tach with shift light because that just looks out of place and really aint nessecary
maybe took 30min-50min to install but wasnt hard and very easey to wire

enjoy

one question does it matter witch coil i hook the signal up to?
i tryed both neg and both worked the same

yay i can see my revs now

I would have sourced a stock tach, I'm not a fan of aftermarket tachs and you loose the buzzer. If you change your mind, I do believe I have an 83 tach. If you keep it, hook it up to the trailing coil, that way you will know if the trailing side of the ignition goes out.
