help with pumpkin

Question help with pumpkin

i was wondering if somebody could give my detailed instructions on swaping a pumpkin out................i have an 85 gs and im swaping a 85 gsl rear end but dont have the money to get the whole rear done before the time i would like to..so im going to only do pumpkins for the time.....and help???????



(reason of not putting rear in is because the rear came from the junk yard so it sat for along time and has rust on the housing which i would like to sand and repaint.....rotors are rusted completly..one caliper is seized shut so if i rebuild or replace it i need to do the same for the other side and need brake pads......)

Pumpkin replacement

What's up amigo?
1) Drain fluid.
2). Remove rear tires
3). Remove calipers and pads.
4). Remove drive shaft.
5). Remove 4 bolts that are holding on backing plate
6). Use puller like slide hammer to remove axles or put rotors on backwards with longer bolts are pull back and forth to loosen axles. remove axles.
7). Remove bolts holding pumpkin in place and remove.
8) reseal pumpkin being installed and bolt in place.
9) Assemble all components and refill with gear oil
When taking axles out turn bearings and make sure their is no roughness felt, if their is replace bearings. Inspect inner seals for any damage. Usually they dont need replacing.

do i have to pull the axles all the way out or could i just pull them to the point that they are clear??

be sure to put an oil pan prior to pulling the axles out. fluid maybe present.

got one more............................how accurate is everybody when they install the diff..? my friend was saying how if im like .000001 off it will damage my diff and make it fail..but i thought if i was installing it in the stock place with a stock size and everything once the housing is place and axles are put in, that would cause it to be in the spot it was supposed to be in..........how should i go about doing it be perfect dead on or just eye it?

Diff

It will only bolt up one way. With he was referring to was when you setup a rearend after replacing diff bearings or ring and pinion it has to be set. No worrying about this because the diff has not been tampered with.

Do you need to replace the pumpking gasket or will RTV work?

Thanks Doc! Just need to order my wheel bearing kits and the GSL pumpkin is goig in. I figured I might as well chang them since theyre shot and will be apart. Anyone ever order the Victoria British kits?

do the bearings just come out with the axles or what??? how are they changed along with seals i was looking at rock auto but couldnt figure out what i needed

the bearings are pressed on the axels and need to be pressed off and back on.
