Help! Oil pressure doing scary things

ok heres the deal, my oil pressure guage isnt working. (im hoping its the oil pressure guage). My pressure guage reads zero or below while im cruising(like its not even getting power) and every once in a while it will come up to a somewhat normal level. Then sharpley drop off again...
Has anyone else had this problem and if so what was the culpret. I have driven it aobut 75miles since this started, and nothing unusual with the way my engine runs.
I have an auto-x this sat and sun and would like to get the problem fixed before then.
Thanks for any help!!

Sounds like the guage to me.... sending unit possibly.... Use the hayne's manual to check it... I'm pretty sure it's checked by resistance...

Run the event!

If your oil pressure truly is zero, you'd know by now. Our gauges are not known for being reliable (or accurate for that matter) so I wouldn't worry about it. Besides, if the oil pressure was gone, the gauge should still go up a little when the car is revved, unless there's a hole the size of a quarter in the oilpan.

You just described mine old one in my 85 to the tee... I bought a new sender from the dealer and all is fine now... Make sure the wiring connection on the old one is clean, and if you have to buy a new one, be sure to take vaseline with you to the dealer, its 57 bucks

yeah ... that sounds like it.

also keep in mind that the sender "might" be just fine, and the wire that attaches to the sensor may be loose or crammed with oily crap. just something to consider ... try taking it off, cleaning it, and seeing if it fits any more snug. if that doesn't work, then condemn the sender unit.

about the autocross, i agree with everyone else. if you really had no oil pressure and drove 75 miles, then the title of this thread would have probably started with "F@#K! my motor just ..."

Same thing happened to my FC right when I bought it... the guage was really sparatic is working, sometimes 0, sometimes shooting up to 60, floating back to 25, then dropping back to 0. I got worried, dumped some 2stroke oil in it, and no sooner then I spent the $ on the oil the pressure read normal again... I went home, changed the oil and filter and haven't had a problem since.
