Got my 6 Disc Changer Installed
Well, I got my changer installed by Best Buy, they did a good job. The only problem is, they can't figure out how to get the lights to illuminate at night on the deck. I have seen the CD changers in the Protege's and they are red light up. But mine is green in the center. Anyone know if the green light shuts off and then a red light turns on. They way they have it now, the green shuts off and no other color comes on. I am not sure if it's my car having the problem (incompatible dimer) or what. Any one have any ideas. Other than that, it fits good. The sides of my plate will need a little filing, but other wise it's a nice replacement for my stock radio.

Ok, here's how I did it. The problem is, those units require some type of special dimmer to work. As for the red or green led's, it depends which one you get. I got a model from the Tribute (pissed me off) which is green on all the bottons. If you get one from the protege's then it's red.
But no sweat. Here's how you make all the lights come on (at least how I did it). Best Buy couldn't figure it out so I decided to improvise. I took the face plate off. It's four screws on the sides and some plastic clips. No cables or ribbons at all, just a din plug. Takes about 2 mintues to remove.
If you look at the back of the panel, you can see the circuit board. You will notice all the little lights soldered in place.
There are 2 lights, across from each other, that match up with the sides of the LCD panel display. These are the ones that always come on when the radio is on.
I jumpered a postive node of these across to a positive node of the other ligths. All of the lights (except for the 2 for the LCD panel) are all in the same series. The positive circuit runs to every one of them around the face. It's easy to see. I soldered a small wire from the positive on the 2 LCD ligths to a positive node on the other lights positive circuit. YOu don't have to strip away the coating to get at it.
Here's why:
Every time a circuit crosses another, there is a little 000 resistor that jumps over. I simply soldered two of these 000 resistors together with a wire for both positive circuits of lights.
Here's the only prtoblem. You can't see any illumination during the day (not that you need to), at night it's ok and you can read the LCD fine. I just can't figure out what type of Dimmer to use to adjust the voltage so it is kinda dimm.
The illumination color actually is pretty close to the color of the cold on the 84/85 mazda dial so it doesn't look shaby.
I would have preferred red, but the radio has killer sound so it's still a good deal.
