Help with my 85 gsl

This car has been in the family for years I recently got into a wreck and this is the only car to drive rn, my grandpa rebuilt the engine a couple years ago it just started getting miles on it when I started driving it so the motor and the seals and everything are new, this week when I would come to a stop and coast in neutral it would just turn off on me and I would have to crank it for a couple minutes, I’m guessing it keeps flooding because when It does eventually start it sounds rough until a clear it out any tips would be great, oh and the carb was recently took apart and clean, the car runs great other than that but I would like not to be at a light trying to turn my car for 5 minutes lol

Did you just wreck your grandpas RX-7? I'm confused.

If its dying when going back to idle I would check for vacuum leaks if it still has the rats nest. Also check the timing to make sure its correct at idle with the vacuum advance disconnected and plugged.

Take a look at the vacuum lines - if they are the originals; change them out. I recommend a silicone vacuum line kit - they function as good as they look -lol.

If you have not done so already, I recommend you download the 85 factory service manual by following the link in the second sticky post at the top of the forum. Grab everything for your car including the 1979-85 Carburetor manual which has testing procedures and how to set the idle mixture and speed.

My father was the first owner, I am the second as of 2003.

Your symptoms sound familiar.
The first time this happened to me it turned out to the shutter valve (aka coasting valve). The it's diaphragm caused a vacuum leak. This was about 20 years ago.

The second time was the air hose that goes from the #1 Anti-Afterburn valve (right side of carb toward the rear) around the back to the intake manifold on the left side, popped off at the Anti-Afterburn valve. I have no idea why but it was very obvious and an easy fix and I added a hose clamp. This was maybe 19 years ago.

I rebuilt the engine 2013-14 and replaced all the vacuum lines connected to the rats nest at that time.

The most recent issue was last Fall when it would not hold idle and just quit. I could keep it running for testing by holding out the choke, but that's not good for driving. All the rats nest solenoids tested good. I then started testing the components with diaphragms. The leading vacuum advance was good, but the trailing one did leak so I replaced it. The problem persisted. The hose from the #1 Anti-Afterburn to the intake manifold was very soft, so I replaced it with a Mazda part. I replaced the vacuum lines on the right side of the carb and all the hoses to the Purge Valve. The two #1 Vacuum Diaphragms (choke) both tested good. The #2 Vacuum Diaphragm was bad, it held no vacuum. I capped off its line and the problem was solved. I then replaced the unit.

Keep after it. You'll get it straighten out.

It's been almost 2 weeks, and he said he's driving grandpa's car until his gets fixed (*or something to that effect). I doubt he'll be back,...

Happens a lot around here with similar questions, and it's my belief the OPs get frustrated and park them, sell them, or give them away to someone else who posts here the following month with similar problems. Oh, well.
