Help! Dowel Pin Locators

So, after many arduous hours of tearing down, lapping and prepping my housings, I am ready to reassemble!

Alas, I am retarded. Somehow I have managed to loose the four little dowel pin locators that are in the front and rear housing. I pulled them out to have a flat surface to lap and now they have been eaten by my basement

Just to clarify I'm not talking about the four big dowels that go through the plates and rotor housings, but the little ones that are used to line up the front cover and transmission.

So my question is, where can I get these replaced? I've looked on all the big sites (Mazdatrix, Atkins Rotary, Pineapple etc...)and have yet to find anything. Could I just use something equivalent in size and shape from the local auto/metalworking store? Or do they have to be made out of something specific?
Or are they even needed?

Thanks guys!

Is this 12a or 13b? I tore apart a 13b GSL-SE engine and have tons of internals. If you have an SE or if the 12a dowels will work I can just ship them to ya.

Its a 12a, but remember, these aren't the big dowels that are like 5 inches long. They're really small, the ones you pull out with the dowel puller tool.
But I don't think that there would be a difference in the size based in it being a 12a or 13b, but honestly I don't know.
If you want, ship away!

So will I have to get them through a Mazda dealership?
I have an 84 gsl and I took out four of them. I don't know what the difference would be
Thanks though, I knew someone would pull through for me!

Yeah, that part number is for the dealership.

Personally, I would take Jeezus's offer^ , I'll bet the dealer would charge $5 a pop.

And it's the same number for all years, 4 needed for 84-85 as well.

Ok, I'll check it out tomorrow and see what they want.

Jeezus, is this what you have? If so, I'll PM you tomorrow and we'll talk

Thanks, guys! hopefully you'll see her in action soon, but definitely at Deals Gap!

They look like little hollow dowel pins, a little smaller than a dime in diameter and about 1/2" tall. there should be four of them

PM me the details and any pics you can find or something to help me locate them. Tomorrow I will get the box down and take a pic of all the parts etc. Circle the ones you want.

I'm flipping through the disassembly procedure and the FSM, and there's no mention of them. Is it something that's not usually taken out?

No, usually these aren't taken out if you are just disassembling the engine. I lapped my side housings and therefore took them out so as to get a true surface to mount the plate.

Here is a video showing the dowel pin locators being removed. you'll see what I'm talking about.

Jeezus, did you find anything in your box-o-parts?

Here are the only dowel pins I could find in my parts box that I have here. Leave my hand alone, the stitches are out and its healing :

one of the boxes...

If anyone knows how to remove the front plate first when disassembling, let me know, I tear my engines from the back first. If someone knows how I can tear apart this one and pull the pins for you.

hmmm... no dice. Thumb looks good though

you should just be able to take out the long bolts connecting the front cover off and undo the e-shaft bolt. The front cover should come off after that.
(correct me if I'm wrong someone, its been a while since I tore one down.)

that e-shaft bolt's a bitch so good luck with it! btw, are there two pins stickin out on the rear iron?

Wow I have no clue how to get those out unless I use some pliers. I don't want to scratch it up too bad, and I don't have a dowel puller.

Do you want me to use pliers?

WAIT. IDEA

YEP!
OR you could do what I did and use grease... let me explain.
fill up the hole with some grease and then find a bolt that is exactly as wide as the inner diameter as the dowel. take the bolt and put it in the dowel and hit it with a hammer. The grease will displace the dowel and they will pop right out!
Swear to God it works.

I'll have to go get another 12x1.5 bolt tomorrow then. The one I used to pull the long dowels out has like 3 rows of ruined threads. I have it soaking in PB Blaster right now.

This thread is exciting
