HELP!!! Clutch Problem!

Exclamation HELP!!! Clutch Problem!

I have a '85 gsl and I haven’t driven it in a while due to the face that I got a RX-8 and I went into the RX-7 and when I put my foot down on the clutch it just goes all the way down and it doesn't come back up and there is no pressure at all.
Any ideas on what could be wrong...
Please I need your help

Make sure there is fluid in the master, and then bleed the system. Check for air bubbles and leaks in the hardline. HTH!

Best guess is that the clutch master and/or slave has gone bad - especially if the master reservoir is full - another sign of a failed master or slave is especially dirty fluid

Ok, how hard would it be to replace the clutch slave if that is what is wrong?

And I love my Rx-8, it gets about 21 mpg when I drive conservatively, yet when I’m racing it WOT and autox event type stuff I get around 10 mpg

Shouldn't be very hard at all if you can bolt and unbolt things. Jack the car up, support it with jackstands and crawl under. You should be able to see the slave right next to the transmission. Be careful with the hardlines though because, well, they're rigid. Breaking them = bad!

Just make sure the slave is what's wrong. Don't ask how I know!

Where do I look to see if the fluid is full?
Do I have to jack the car up and check the clutch master or is there a simpler way?

ummm... on what car is that?

The location for the clutch slave on 79-91, are on top of the bell housings.

All you need is a 12mm socket and an 12' extension.

If you still cant figure it out. let em know and ill write u up a tut w/pics.

oh..


You look at the clutch master cylinder. Its the one right next to the brake booster.

All these things are accesible & replaceable under the hood and no need for a jack.

Where is Los Gatos? Maybe if ur close i can help.

Well I just checked out my master cylinder and there is no oil in there! so that means that something broke and the oil has leaked out, but I didnt see any oil around the master cylinder so where else should I check?

The oil could leak out around the slave cylinder, or it could actually be in the car where the rod goes through the firewall to the master cylinder. Your best bet would be to just fill up the cylinder with some new stuff, and keep an eye on it to see if it is going down. It is really easy to rebuild the components so don't take it anywhere.

Bah @ rebuild...

I don't trust rebuilding any type of hydraulic cylinder unless I have a hone for it... Which I don't...

I replace both master and slave at the same time on an car, and when one goes out, the other one is gonna follow in suit very shortly. It costs less than $100...

Ok, where can I find the Slave Cylinder?
I know where the Master Cylinder is but I have no clue where the other is.
By the way thank you all of you who have helped me, this is the stuff that I need to know about so I can bring my RX-7 back to life.

tomrow when i get home from school i will take pics and stuff for you..........mine had the same problem i could bleed the system but over night it would go dry and couldnt drive rebuilt the master still happened got a new slave and havnt had any problems in 2 months so far........if you look at the master cyclnder you will see a hard line that runs along the firewall which then goes into a rubber hose that leads in a downward direction in the very center of the firewall it has a bleeder and is the only thing ontop of your tranny housing that is where you will see ur slave......let me get back to you on those pics as now good night

oh yea paid $4 for my MC rebuild kit which took me about 25min to do and then i paid $9 for my slave

Check the line that runs directly outta the master cylinder, there's a fitting not too far from the master cylinder itself, mine had a leak there. (in the process of draining auto tranny fluid from the system, put there by previous owner....trying to save the system before something goes wrong) that's how I'm learning this stuff.

To buy or re-build...that was another debate. Re-built my master, new slave. If you are inclined replace the rubber line also. Rusty spent a bit less and will probably go just as far.

rebuild kits for the master and the slave are very cheap - however, a new master and a new slave are not that much more - and a new one will likely last you a lot longer - and having to change either again just is not worth the savings of a rebuild over a new one - just my 2cents - also recommend changing the rubber hose at the same time - same logic as above - too much trouble to have to remove the slave again when the hose goes bad - pay now or pay more later (that is if you place any value on your time)!!!

www.nopionline.com and www.forparts.com are 2 web based sites that have the best prices on these parts - I seem to remember nopioline having the best price, but they only had one of the 2 pieces I was looking for - can't remember now whether it was the slave or master they had - but which ever one it was, the $$$ was the best I found by a large margin and Olympus auto parts was second best (www.forparts.com) & they had the other part

PS: getting to the bolts on the slave is a bit difficult - Pele had a posting a while back where he had come up with the idea of using wax in a socket to help keep the bolt in, which helped to get the bolt started on the re-install
