Question Help! cannot fit clutch!?

Hello RX7 Gurus:

I can't figure out my clutch on my 12A. I am dealing with a lot of unknowns. The first clutch kit I bought was for 83-89 RX7. It didn't fit (everything lined up, but clearance was wrong - PP was so far from flywheel it was hard to start the bolts.) Looked at the mazdatrix site, discovered my flywheel has the number '21' in the back, which should mean it is an 81-82. Ordered a clutch kit for that, but still have the same problem. Hard to start the bolts to mount the PP, and as I tighten them, the fingers of the PP start pointing towards the engine instead of being parallel with the flywheel surface. Parts I have are Exedy, disc is MZDO14U, PP is MZC509
Are these right? Have I missed something? BTW, this engine is not in an RX7, so I don't have any serial numbers or anything to go by. Hell, I'm not even sure what year the engine is!

Thanks for any help you can offer,

James

Only thing that comes to mind is an aftermarket lightened flywheel, these need small metal spacers between the pp, and the flywheel.
If you could take a picture of the flywheel we might be able to help.

here is a page with a few photos of the stock flywheels and the years.

Spacers would make it work, I guess, if it all still fit in the bellhousing. But it doesn't look like an aftermarket flywheel, as it has the number '21' cast in the back, and it looks exactly like the flywheel pictured for 81-82 12A on the mazdatrix site.
I'm wondering if I've been supplied the wrong pressure plate?

Sounds like maybe you have the disc in backwards. The springs on the disc go towards the pp, not the flywheel. Try turning it over.

I don't think I had the disc backwards, it pretty much only fits one way, I believe.

Wackyracer, thanks for the offer, but I'm on the west coast of Canada near Vancouver. I've emailed the mechanic who built the engine, I'm hoping he'll have a response that makes sense.

If it is a stock flywheel as you described and their is a large gap in-between the pressure plate and the flywheel, you have the disk in ***-backwards. The flat side of the disk goes towards the flywheel and the raised side goes away from the flywheel.

OK, Thanks for all the responses. It turns out that Exedy put the wrong pressure plate in my clutch kit, they are now (apparently) sending me the right one.

They are not the first ones to make that error, it happened to me with a Auto parts store once.
