Hello, new to forum..
Hi, obviously im new here, and I have a few questions about my reciently aquired 84 gsl-se. Im very familar with the way rotary engines work, however I lack experience in driving them and there normal operating characteristics. My car idles rough, very rough, once it warms up it idles ok, but still sputters every now and then. Is this normal for the 6 port engine, or is it because the engine has substantial mileage on it? I had it checked at the dealer and he said my compression was still great. Also the engine smells strongly of gas sometimes after its shut off. There apears to be a leak in the fuel system someplace under the intake manifold and the tb, is this a common problem with these cars? any replies would be appreciated thx

Yeah, use the search function. But to answer your question, I think a regular tune wouldn't do any harm. Change the following:
Spark plugs (use NGK only)
Air filter
Oil and filter change
Fuel filter
Distributor cap and rotor
As for the fuel leak, it could be from the pulsation damper (heard about it but never seen it), anyway do a search on that one.
Welcome to the club, take care of that se!

Sounds like the classic symptoms of a bad pulsation damper (fuel smell/leak)
You need to fix this immediately, as in "don't drive the car" at all. If you do you are risking an engine compartment fire. Not a pretty thing.
As for the idle it could be a lot of things. go to this site, http://members.ij.net/mrmazda/gslseidle.html

I see nothign wrong with them tellign him about the search function. He may just not know its there... when I first posted, i had no idea it was there, and now i'm able to find most any information i need just from searching, and when i cant, you'll see me post. If no-one ever flamed me for asking the same old question, i defn wouldnt be as far along with my project as i am now. So just relax, they werent attacking him, just letting him know, and im sure like me, he'll appreciate it in the long run.

The search feature is nice, but it's hard to find any useful information. I've spent countless hours searching for different stuff and have found that 95% of all the posts are total meaningless crap, most of which are from the same handfull of people who are only interested in having more number of posts than the other guy.

I suppose if you're looking for things like "how do I mix my gas" or "how do I remove the rats nest" or "where does the blinker fluid go" or "I think my muffler bearings are going out, what should I do" then you'll probably find more info than you will ever want to read.

Hello and welcome. I'd recommend getting yourself a timing light and checking the timing as well. That might do wonders for your 'sputtering'. Anyways, it's worth checking. A shop manual would be a highly recommend purchase. You can also check the following link as a resource for any work you may do. http://www.iluvmyrx7.com/1984_mitchell_maint_info.htm

Let us know MATTEWPINS what happens with that fuel leak, and I agree with HANMAN, find that fuel leak before an accident happens.
By the way, I hope you weren't offended by me telling you to use the search function, it's just that a lot of newbies don't know that it's there, including me not too long ago. I'm sure PEDESTRIAN X agrees with me.
Temper, temper...

Ok guys, well the fuel leak for now seems to have gone away, im not really sure what thats about but it is forsure the pulsation damper, which pisses me off because I just shelled out a chunk of change to have that entire system replaced not 2 months ago at the mazda dealer. So naturally im going to go jump all over them.... and no I wasnt offended however im familiar with the layout of this board. Ima long time member of stormowners.com, being that I own a storm and an isuzu impulse turbo, However the sputtering I think may be related to the air/fuel ratio at idle, apon looking at the plugs they look as though the car is running rather lean most of the time, and that idle air/fuel mix screw has been tampered with being that the insulation is gone, could that be my problem, I just changed the dist. wires, and plugs, etc etc so im at a loss either the engine has bad compression in one section or there is a problem with timing and or air/fuel mix, what do you guyz think

First thing to do is to take it back to Mazda to repair that pulsation damper, which is still on warranty. Most people on this forum will agree that most Mazda dealers have no idea what they are doing when it comes to rotary engines.
Next step is to thouroughly check ignition. Start by the plugs, the leads, distributor cap and rotor. You should also check the timing. Coils and ignitors are common culprits in the ignition system. A clogged fuel filter will also give you similar problems, but mostly when running at high RPMs when the engines needs the extra fuel. Spend 15$ on the Haynes manual, lots of good info in there too.
After reading your first post again, no it's not normal for a rotary to sputter like that. Rotary engines are the smoothest engines in the world, and when they're running right they produce virtually no vibrations.
