I had briefly considered doing a headlamp conversion, but after much research realized that to be happy with one it would cost $100++ so for now have opted to install Sylvania Silverstar Headlights.

Installation was easy, they just replace stock bulbs. Lighting was improved over stock halogens considerably. Distance is further without sacrificing side illumination. Color is an improvement as well. Not as white as High Intensity Discharge, but alot whiter than normal halogens. Also doesn't have that ghetto blue tint like other "high performance" headlamps. All and all fairly happy with purchase, but need more time driving at night and in bad weather to see if they are a must have. Life expectancy is also a concerns as these lamps burn hotter than stock. Will post pictures later. Life expectancy is also a concerns as these lamps burn hotter than stock.

I'm saving up to get a $300 hid conversion, AFTER all my engine work is done...it's going to own.

Still, considerably nice looking headlights for an even 40 bucks...

Most HID discharge kits are universal with the exception of bulb type.

I wonder if the stock alternator would like HIDs very much though...

I would recommend against an HID conversion. I will find it when I get home, and link it so you can see, but there is a study out that shows HID causes eye strain and seriously impairs driver ability to see things to the sides. They're just too bright. Stock lights also cause eye strain because of the large blind spot just in front of the car. Apparantly the best lights for night driving are H4 inserts, like my IPFs or Hellas.

Where I work we actually sell a conversion kit to change the headlights over to replacable bulbs instead of sealed beam units. The Headlamp assembly itself is made by APC (I know, bear with me) and basically its a housing with lens that accepts 9003, H4, and H1 bulbs. The pigtails for these bulbs are the same as a 6024 sealed beam (I am pretty sure, I'll double check tomorrow.) Anyway, we can get the 100W/110W Silverstar bulbs meant for motorcycles, so you pop those into the housing, mount the assembly in stock location, plug it in, and bam!! Uber bright headlights.


EDIT: these APC (crap, but these are actually somewhat good construction, very un-APC) are about $7.00 each, and the bulbs are pretty much always around $20 each, so this is a little more expensive, but damn are they bright.

I'll have my alternator changed by then, also...whether they're good for your eyes or not, they still put out more light. Yeah, they burn a gas type instead of run through a filament. Besides...all the new BMW, Mercedez, Audi, Acura RL/TL, Maxima, 350, G35's have them..so why not us? You can stay stock lighting, but for me i'll gor forth with my conversion. Thanks for the info though.

Oh yeah, i'm going to be fabricate my own Hid. I'm going to set them up soley by myself with some help of a friend that installed some HIDs on his 1988 Mr2...

Thats foolish. And they may put out MORE light, but H4's put out BETTER light. Human eyes don't like blue, they like yellow. A strong yellow light, like you get with a H4 bulb, allows you to see better. Unless you are getting the HID's purely for "Bling", save your money.

I've got HID lights in my fb and I like the difference that it made compared to the stock headlights. Only thing is that I don't think that most HID conversions are street legal. I know that mine isn't.

Well...before I get into spending money on lights and other accessories, i'd rather do engine, suspension work. I'll just have to wait and see if I'l have another 400 bucks laying around..*Shrug*...
