Headlamp won't park correctly
Headlamp won't park correctly
Hello everyone,
So I hit a really big bump/dip in the road, and my driver side headlight fell completely closed. After taking the battery out, I was able to see that the one connecting rod fell off. I reconnected it, but cannot for the life of me get this headlight to close all the way. When I turn the headlights on, (whether with the combo switch or the switch on the dash---doesn't matter) both headlights come all the way up the way they should. When I turn them off, the driver side with "park" about 2 inches higher. I tried many times manually cranking it up and down with no luck. No matter what I do that headlight will not park flush with fascia panel. I disconnected the battery many times. I read the post in the link below and the reference link in that thread, but it does not address the issue. The OP in the link below has a picture of his headlights and how the one parks incorrectly. If you look at it, that's exactly what's happening with mine, except my issue is on the other side. Please advise and thank you in advance.

Have you had a second person flip the switch in the car while you watch the problem one go up and down?
Guessing that it will go into the correct home position on its way up or when it’s coming back down. It’s just stopping at the wrong point in the circular sweep of the motor, most likely means the contact/limit switch that tells the motor where home/park/down needs to be cleaned or adjusted.

Pull the cap off the top of the light motor and there is a **** that can be manually turned to open/close the light. Sometimes this will reset them. Also make sure the plastic bushing is still in place of the light motor rod.
Also, compare how the arms are attached to the bellcrank pivot by looking at the other side. When its all attached correctly - the arms in the right place, all of the ball joints intact - there's really nowhere else for the mechanism to stop. Take a close look at the arm lengths to be sure you didn't swap them.
In my experience, either the motor mechanism works or it doesn't. Theres very rarely an issue of "in-between" due to the limit switches which control motor operation.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I did get it to finally park correctly. After messing with it for about 15 minutes yesterday, I realized that the manual adjust on top of motor has nothing to do with where the headlight parks. It seems at best, that screw on top is for fine tweaking at best. It's going to travel the same distance whether it's spot on or way out. What's important is that you manually get the light to its correct starting position. To do this, there is a single 10mm bolt behind the motor bracket that if you turn it, it will sort of ratchet itself a few degrees up or down depending on which direction you're turning. In my case, I had to turn the bolt so that the motor ratcheted two clicks down. After that, it parked fine. I only needed to turn the screw on top of motor a few hairs to complete the parking of light.
