Header vs straight pipe

Alright, I have a dilema. Currently I have a Bonez Cat on my car, but I'd like to buy a bolt in place straight pipe to replace it for most of the year... My question comes in here: How simple is it to install a bolt on header and then just switch out the stock manifold and Cat for the yearly tailpipe test? Should I go ahead and get just the cat replacement pipe, or go for the full header system?

TIA

well if it was me what i would do is get a mindtrain stage 5 header(same lenght as stock) and also get a cat replacement pipe. then just swap out the cat and the pipe when its smog time or not. i do this all the time

SO the mindtrain header is a direct replacement for the stock manifold and converters? I heard mindtrain sucks though, are any others direct bolts ups? How about any of the RB stuff?

Who sells mindtrain anyway?

Actually mindtrain is very good, in my opinion, but I have racingbeat headers, which are awesome. If you want to do custom exhaust, or pay for the pre-silencer, get racingbeat, if you want to just bolt it right up, go with mindtrain. They are both excellent.

how much extra hp would slapping on a RB header and 2" exhaust - no cat w/ high flow muffler and a k+n air filter? This is on a 84 gsl-se 13b EFI.

exhaust

your headers and 2" exhaust would probably add lots of hp, but you couldn't hear yourself think with in 50 feet of the car. I tried that and at 7500rpm it sounded like a 747 on take off. you could probably deafen a harley rider. ended up putting a cat back in to shut the thing up a little.[QUOTE]

Same here man. I tried no cat once. I couldn't stand it. It hurt my ears in the car. It sounded like a sprint car. I revved it in town and immediately all the Honda boys from miles around revved their little 4 bangers.

i have a header and a couple pre-scilencers and it is rather quiet. at idle, is is quiter than the stock exhaust, and under pressure it goes up to a really nice, but non obtrusive, sound...

problem though is smog. i had to rip of the entire exhaust manafold, air pump, and acv.. so i am going to have a bitch of a time getting everything back to normal, or finding a way to get it to pass emissions..

Alright then... I guess I'll look into mindtrain. I was getting it mixed up with pacesetter on the suckage...

Who sells mindtrain stuff? Anyone close to DFW? I don't see it listed on any of the normal vendors for stuff.

So would the RB streetable header and a presilencer bolt up?

how much is lots of hp? a figure - like 50hp? Anyway, I have no cat now, 2 cheap mufflers, and it is real quiet, so would a header really make it that loud? Also, could I use the Racing Beat disassembled road race header kit to save money? $78 U.S. compared to $182 US for the streetable header.
