Has anyone ACTUALLY successfully used a 3g coil (3gcdfis)?

In the FAQ there is a link but it turns out the fellow was using a 2nd gen coil, not the 3g unit. So, has it been done? I have one I would like to use on my 12a pp but I'm not certain how to go about it since everything here is dealing with the 2gcdfis procedure. I assume there is more to it than mounting it to the firewall, swapping the pos and neg wires and appropriately rearranging the plug wires? Internal modification was necessary on the 2g coil. The 3g coil is a sealed unit. Any and all help is appreciated.

I thought the 2nd gen unit was more powerful.

Perhaps so. I was just hoping to use what I had available.

2nd gen coil is better. But like anything, try it and see. I won't stop you.

The 3rd gen unit is certainly better than a 1st gen coil, but not quite as good as a 2nd gen unit. That being said since you have a 3rd gen coil use it. It will still be a big improvement over factory, and you won't have to spend extra cash. It will be a little unique too. Wow unknowing spectators by saying you have a twin turbo ignition setup!

Turbo ignition....I like that. If only it could utilize the word "laser" as well. We could sell them like hot cakes!
So by just hooking this guy up my poor little j-109 will be overworked? I have never performed the 2gcdfis or the likes. Is there anything I truly need to do to the ignitor or the dist. or just connect the pos and neg from the stock coil to the 3g coil (scored a harness connector to make the job easier), swap the plug wires and go? I suppose a slathering of heak sink compound would be a good thing. I read through the entire 2gcdfis thread and just ended up a bit confused

Good luck with the 3GCDFIS! Love to hear how well it works for you...

Just an FYI, I did the 2GCDFIS mod and it was REALLY simple.....I mean so simple, you'll ask yourself...."that can't be all there is to it".

I've got a nice write up that Installer did for me....followed the direction, took maybe 20 minutes from start to finish. I won't speak for everyone, but I could definatly feel the difference! Just a lot smoother and powerful through the rpm range.

Let me know if you want the write up....I'll send it to ya.

the FD coil is just a coil. make sure its good before you put it on, they are not very durable

Will do! Thanks for all the assistance fellas.
j9fd3s- What idle jets are you using on the 48ida? Did you perform the third progression hole modification on the carb?

my problem right now is that the intake gets too hot, and it really changes the mixture from about right, to way way rich.

carb is jetted just like the competition prep book, but i have mufflers so 80 idle jet = mixture screws almost closed. with 70's they are like 1/2 turn out. the engine isn't too picky about fuel mixture at idle, or timing.

no 3rd hole at this time.

So there are no balast resisters or ignitors on the 3rd gen coil?

Nothing that I see directly attached to it. I think the ignitor must be separate. Here is a drawing I just located:

on the FD the ignitor is on the left inner fender by the fire wall, the coil is just a coil

Oh I see. Do you think I should just use the MSD blaster coil I have in place of the fd unit?

interesting. since the 3g is just a coil, wonder how well the j-109's will hold up firing it.
