happy accident
This might seem trivial to some, but having broken bits in my car, mechanical or otherwise, bothers me.
When I bought my GSL-SE, the plastic joints retaining the sunvisors were broken. The visors stayed in place, but sagged and would flop over bumps.
I removed the sun visors from my parts car and installed them in place of the broken ones. Trouble is, the broken ones were taut, mint-cindition fabric and the replacements from my '83 parts car were a crappy vinyl. Ah well, they were a similar burgundy/maroon.
So today I decided to fix the fabric ones and reinstall them. I carefully welded the plastic back together and installed them. Snap. I rewelded. Snap. ****. I rewelded. Snap. Son of a-
As I was getting pissed off I decided to walk away from the project for a while. As I was putting the visor down I wondered about taking apart the visors and swapping the covers. To get an idea of how the internals were instructed I grabbed the metal shank (the chrome finished bit with the 90 degree bend) and pulled on it.
It slid right out.
Duh! The sunvisor flips up/down, and to make a simple joint Mazda simply slides the metal shank into a fitted metal tube inside the visor body.
I was able to keepslide the cloth visors onto the shank/solid plastic from the vinyl visors to combine them into one mint set, no tools required.
Total time for the actual repair, 20 seconds.
Total time ******* around plastic welding, removing/reinstalling hardware unneccessarily, 32 minutes.
Completing the task and getting a great result in spite of yourself, priceless.

Haha, thats good to know though, as the visors in my 83 GSL are "poofing up", and the ones in my parts car are just fine. So youre saying I can just slide them off the shafts and switch them?

Cool!! Thanks Manntis!!

PS - I was also going to do some custom sunvisor work, and knowing how to take them off will really help...By custom, I mean 4" LCD video monitors in each one
. They will work well with my custom Playstation 2 install in the glovebox

Check my avatar out on the left. That is going to be the start to my custom dash. Going to have either a 5" or 6" full color TFT screen with A/V input. DVD player right below it. The dash in the picture is my actual '82 GSL dash with some conceptual photoshop work done to it to make sure things will fit and look right. I have a Dreamcast right now still so most likely that is going to be the game station until I replenish my funds. Luckily I haven't gotten tired of Crazy Taxi 2 or Sega GT yet
I figure with my electronics knowledge, and good resources for parts I can come in under most DVD/LCD combo packages and still have a kicking system. I'll be doing the custom molding for the dash that is needed too.
