Guess what I found!

Yesterday, me and a 'carlo SS were, uh, passing each other on a 4 laner, and I was not paying close enough attention to my tach.
Well at around 7500 rpm, the car reminded me with a LOUD buzzer!
I about **** my pants....... was not expecting that!
Is that a reminder buzzer, or what?
BTW, this is on an '85 gsl-se.

it's the shift buzzer. you shouldn't shift till you hear that.

When I first had the 7, I thought it was someone honking at me, because every time I hit those kinda RPM, I was pulling from a side street or parking lot onto a Busy road... Usually right in front of someone. (You can only wait so long for a good gap in the traffic, before you get impatient and opt for a smaller gap.)

Man... So many unnecessary flippings of the bird.

I love that answer.

I find it hard NOT to redline it when accellerating quickly, the damn thing reves up to 7500 so quickly. I hear the buzzer daily.

Off topic conversation I had with a passenger the other day:

*pull into traffic quickly, hits redline buzzer when shifting*
Pass: WHAT WAS THAT?
Me: Redline buzzer, lots of cars have one when you redline it.
Pass: Mine doesn't.
Me: Well yours is an automatic, the transmission won't let you redline it.
Pass: So you're saying my car is a piece of crap?
Me: No, just that the auto transmission won't let you redline it.
Pass: So you're saying that automatics are crap?
Me: Well, yes, now that you mention it they are.

i luv taking it into the redline as much as the other guy, but u dont really need 2 take it into the redline u dont make peak power in that area, i usually would shift round 5500-6grand since i believe that's were the peak power start's and finishes

I thought the same thing fox. Playing around a bit though, I've learned that even though power seems to quit going up after 6k, it's better to let it go on up to 6500 or 7k before shifting. Doing that, allows you to start off in the next gear better b/c the RPMs aren't dropping as much. Try it. Trying doing a 1/4mi. launch shifting at 5500 and then try it shifting at 7k. I think you'll notice less lag in acceleration between shifts that way. Quick shifts from high RPMs is hard to beat!

If I'm not mistaken, I'm thinking that 7k shifts only bring you down to like 3k when you hit the next gear.

Well, I've been in redline plenty of times and never heard it. I don't even have a radio installed so I would have heard it if it went of. Maybe the owner before me unplugged it. I probably would have done that anyway. Sounds annoying...

well, how far up doe you consider redline?

I think on my GS it goes all the way up to the end of the tach before i hear the buzzer. Can't say for sure though since I hardly ever actually watch the tach when i'm driving like that.

I'd say 7500 is probably the highest I've taken it, but like you at those times I'm not watching the tach real close. Maybe I've just not gone that far yet.

There's an adjustment for it. Search for the diagram. It's drawn by hand on a napkin. Use "napkin" for a search term.

If you really want to find out, i would say take it up in the RPM until you feel like its going to explode, and go a little further. But if it doesn't feel right for you, don't do it. No sense in damaging an engine just to see if it has a rev buzzer.

After several years some redline buzzers just stop working. Its a possiblity.

I have never heard mine. My cars been over 8500 rpm too. Totally by accident though. Throttle stuck open once and the revs went to at least 9000 rpm for a few sec before I was able to shut it down. That might be why my engine just recently gave up on me.

Well, the raceshop next to me said the 13B is good to around 11-13k before she goes.
Did I mention that the 13B is the only engine they use!
The engines are rebuilt every 4 years to factory specs, and they use the OMP.
Anyway, point is, The buzzer comes on long before bad stuff happens.
As for using it for a shift indicator, I agree it is a little high, but you know, my car wasn't really falling off at that point; I was just about to shift anyway!

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking! At 135k mi. on the ole' 12A, I use MMO religously and, unless by accident, don't go past 7-7500. Now, for the ported rotaries, I hear that 9k rpm can be like an everyday thing. Of course, that's using like Atkins internals too.

9k rpm CAN be a regular thing, but not on a stock motor!
the redline is there for a reason, just because there aren't rods to throw doesn't mean that things don't like to be spun that fast.

An overrev now and then isn't going to hurt things (much) but blatant, intentional overrevving is dumb.
