Question just pulled the nikki outta my car

and it was surpisingly easy, couldn't have taken more then 30min, would've been quicker except for the oh so many vacuum tubes. but i had a couple of questions.

1. should the secondary's open when i move the linkage for the throttle. ie when i pull on the throttle cable, the primarys open, but nothing happens to the secondary's.

2. what's the purpose of the single butterfly valve in the intake below the carb?
its below the transmission side primary valve.

also for question #1 if that is normal, would mech secondary's be recommened, seeing as i'm going to pull the carb apart anyways.

A lot of people really recomend converting the nikki to mech. secondaries (they are vacume fed now) It really depends on what you use the car for and if you care about fuel consumption.. search for "mechanical secondaries how to"

1. No it should not unless modified. It is operated off vacuum eaning with correct load on engine and such it will only just playing with carb will not open secondaries.
lots of opinions on mecha secondaries, it all depends on personal preference i think. You have to be more leniant with pedal at low rpms with mech secondaries

2. That is the shutter valve if we're taling about the same thing. do a search on it, it will provide you with better info than i can give.

the mech secondaries sterling wrote up a sticky (in the faq section) about how to convert and what it does. as for the single butterfly valve, it is called a shutter valve. I removed mine and it seemes as if slightly more airflow than before is getting through there. Mabye it is my imagination...anyway it is for emissions reasons. When you decelerate it cuts off the fuel flow to the second rotor, quickening the deceleration in rpms and reducing emissions (I guess?!?) that is all it does. I don't think it is worth a damn thing so I removed it. Just be sure to patch up all the holes very well or you will have a leak.
