gslse gas tanks

Ok, I was under the impression that the gsl-se gas tanks were different than the non se. I have heard that they have baffles inside as well as a larger hole for the fuel lines. Now looking at Mazdatrix page, it looks like all 84-85 rx-7's use the same tank:

Is this correct?

*Edit* Looks like they are the same tank but may have different pickups

Since it looks like they are the same, here's a question. I have a smashed gslse and am going to take off all of the suspension and rear end for a possible swap onto a non se. (the gas tank on this se is smashed) How do you safely drain the gas tank so that I can take off the pickup tube and stuff to convert a non se gas tank to an se one. I've thought about puncturing a hole in the bottom but don't want to cause a spark.....BOOM

There is a drain screw on the bottom of the tank that you can undo to drain it.

Same tank, what are you guys talking about?

The GSL-SE tank is the one on the left.

What year rx-7 is the one on the right off of? I called Mazdatrix and they said all 84-85's are the same except for the tubes coming out of it (which can be swapped). The 83's and earlier are different according to them. Is the one on the right an 83 or earlier?

OH, MT is right, I forgot that the 83 was hard tube pick up, but the 84-85 had a removable pick up tube.

All the tanks have drain plugs, The -SE's tanks use a 'drop-in' pick-up, thats attached to a plate, and the plate is held on with screws to the tank. The hard lines are larger too. Inside the -Se tanks it's not really much
of a baffle, it's more like bracing, but i think all the tanks have it.

not all 1st gen tanks have drain plugs. i think in 83 the started... but i do know 4 a fact (the hard way) 81 didnt and yes the dam tank was full when i had to drop it...
i have a dirty as **** -se tank sitting in my garage with the top off if you want to see the baffle... i think im just going to get a good shop to weld in a sump for my t2 project.. its faster and cheaper than getting a good -se tank. i think summit gets 63$ for a sump with -an fittings on it

I had a horrible time with gas tanks when I needed it.

The GSLESE's tank only leaves room for a minispare. My car has a full size spare and I went through hell getting the gas tank squared away!

Do all SA's have a different tank for a full size spare? Is the tank smaller as a result?
